President’s Weekly Update for Monday, Jan. 21

Men’s Soccer Continues Adding Honors

The season is long since past, but the record-setting performance of our men’s soccer team continues to reap rewards. Over the weekend, our coach, Cale Wasserman (also an SVSU graduate) received national coach of the year honors for NCAA Division II from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. As you may recall, senior Zach Myers previously won national player of the year honors.  Read more on Cale’s honor »

Moot Court Teams Argue Well at Nationals

Our students are faring well in academic-based competitions, too. Over the weekend, three teams of students participated in the national moot court competition held in Virginia Beach, Va. Political science majors Hailey Kimball of Millersburg and Kevin Lorentz of Bentley advanced to the second day and took 13th place out of 80 qualifying teams from across the United States. The teams of Mikaela Burch and Brandon Harris, and Marissa Geyer Larissa Skalecki also qualified for nationals. Our colleague, Julie Keil, has done a fine job building this program, still in just its third year.

State of the University Address Thursday

My annual State of the University presentation is this Thursday at 4 p.m. in the Malcolm Field Theatre for Performing Arts.  I hope I can make it interesting this year.  There are a number of important items to bring to your attention.

Winter Weather

After an unusually mild winter last year, today’s frigid temperatures remind us we live in Michigan and should expect winter weather from time to time. Such conditions may make it necessary to cancel classes, a decision we make based upon a number of factors, principally the safety of our students, faculty and staff. This serves as a useful occasion to encourage you to consider signing up for our Campus Alert system, which will notify you of weather closings and other emergencies. more information »
