New Academic Appointments

Don Bachand is announcing that two new deans have been hired. Mary Harmon has agreed to serve as dean for the College of Education. In addition to her fine work in English education here since 1991, Mary has 23 years of public school experience.

Rama Yelkur, dean of College of Business & Management

In the College of Business and Management, we have hired Rama Yelkur to succeed Jill Wetmore. She comes to us from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and has a D.B.A. from Mississippi State.

Poonam Kumar, director of online/hybrid learning

Poonam Kumar has agreed to become our new director of online/hybrid learning.

Helen Raica-Klotz, director of the Writing Center


Helen Raica-Klotz will be the new director of the Writing Center to succeed Diane Boehm.

Congratulations to Student Leaders


Congratulations to:

  • Dylan Kosaski, a biochemistry major from Stanwood, who won the election to become next year’s president of Student Association.
  • Doug Boehm, as well. Over the weekend, the economics major from Rochester Hills was named president of the Student Association of Michigan, the group that represents the elected student governments of all 15 public universities and advocates in Lansing on student policy matters.
  • Sarah Lewan, who received the Outstanding Community Impact Award from Michigan Campus Compact. Only six students from across the state received this honor.  The nursing major from Royal Oak created a non-profit organization that is run out of her dorm room and has raised funds for approximately 350 mosquito nets to protect families in Africa from malaria.

Receptions for Retiring Colleagues

Several colleagues are retiring at the end of the academic year, and I hope you’ll find time to thank these loyal and dedicated colleagues. Please join us for these scheduled retirement receptions as your schedule permits:

  • Diane Boehm, founded our Writing Center and has mentored countless student writing tutors over the years. Her reception is today, Monday, April 15 at 4 p.m. in the Curtiss Hall Banquet Rooms
  • Bob Braddock, Eric Petersen and Tom Renna, – Landee winners all – depart with a combined 130 years of service to this institution. Their reception is Thursday, April 18 at 4 p.m. in Curtiss Hall Seminar Rooms D, E, F                                                                    
  • Susie Emond and seven retiring faculty: Myra Falls, Doug Hansen, Elizabeth Hansen, Kathy Kalmar, Helene Lusa, Nancy Rice, and Sue Wood, Thursday, April 25 at 4 p.m. in ES 202. A special thanks to Susie Emond for her valued service as dean these past three years and for her fine work throughout her 35 years at SVSU.

All-University Awards Banquet Friday


Several of those retiring this year have received SVSU’s highest awards. A new cast of colleagues, as well as some of our most valued friends, will be honored this Friday during the All-University Awards banquet. I hope you can join us.
