Athletics

Parents understand the value of fitness and athletic competition as healthful ways to round out your student’s university experience. SVSU offers varsity sports, club and intramural sports. If your student is experiencing homesickness or maybe isn’t meeting people as quickly as s/he’d like, team sports is a great way to get exercise and meet new friends. Equipment rentals (sports racquets, sports balls) are available at the Fitness Center desk and are free with your student’s ID.

Regarding varsity sports, SVSU is an NCAA Division II institution and a member of the GLIAC conference. Varsity sports include: women’s basketball, cross-country, indoor/outdoor track and field, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball. Men’s teams include baseball, basketball, bowling (Michigan Intercollegiate Bowling Conference), cross-country, football, golf, soccer and indoor/outdoor track and field.

Club sports include mens and women's lacrosse, men’s ice hockey, co-ed swimming, men’s volleyball, women’s volleyball, co-ed tennis, men’s wrestling, men’s rugby, women’s rugby, men’s baseball, women’s soccer, men’s soccer.

Intramural sports are played on campus, for fun! Flag football, basketball (5/5), volleyball, floor hockey, co-ed softball, basketball (3/3), indoor soccer and racquetball.

Encourage your student to help relieve the occasional academic pressure with eating healthy and getting plenty of exercise. The Fitness Center offers cardio equipment, nautilus equipment, free weights and a variety of other fitness equipment.

As tough as adjusting to college is for everyone, we understand that there is often additional support that minority students seek and appreciate.  Your student can meet with Minority Student Services by appointment or as a walk-in.

Advisement includes academic and student support programs as well as advisement regarding personal concerns.  Free tutoring, class scheduling assistance and the facilitation and development of minority student experiences through educational programs and activities are just a few of the services offered.

Volunteer programs, Greek Life, cultural programs, Alternative Breaks, Leadership Development Programs, Campus Recreation, Program Board, Registered Student Organizations and campus traditions like Homecoming events are offered - more than 110 recognized clubs and organizations in all (a complete listing on the web site).

The Student Life Center includes the Cardinal Cage, an entertainment area for meeting, relaxing and socializing. Board and video games are available for check out and billiards and ping pong are free of charge.
