Application Procedures for Online and Hybrid Courses

Applications to offer or teach online courses are now being accepted for the Wi 2008, SP/SU 2009, and the Fall 2009 semesters. The applicaiton deadline for WI 2009 courses is October 24, 2009. For SP/SU 2009 classes, the deadline is February 27, 2009. And applications for FA 2009 will be accepted until March 20, 2009.  These dates are determined by registration schedules and are not flexible.

Application for Online or Hybrid Courses

Course Application Form (.RTF document)

This form must be used for new or provisionally-approved online and hybrid courses.
A proposal for a new online or hybrid course must demonstrate that this format best serves the needs of the course, the students, the program, and the university. The rationale for offering the online/hybrid course must address the programmatic and pedagogical advantages.

All graduate programs are invited to submit applications for online courses. A limited number of undergraduate courses will be approved in this cycle. We expect that most of these will be at the junior or senior level because research shows that more mature students are better served by this format. However, compelling arguments for any undergraduate course will be considered.

How to apply:

  1. The process can be initiated by an individual faculty member or the department chair. Forms are attached to this message and available from the dean’s secretaries. The form should be filled out electronically.
  2. The form must be signed by the department chair and the dean, indicating their agreement that the online or hybrid format meets programmatic needs. Their signatures also confirm their support for the syllabus and assessment plan.
  3. The signed form is forwarded to the Office of Academic Affairs, where the Vice President will give final approval based on the rationale for offering the course. This will be done in the context of all of the requests for online courses to ensure a reasonable number of sections and a good cross section of courses.

Renewal for Online or Hybrid Courses

Course Renewal Form (.RTF document)

This form must be used for courses that have received full approval.

This form requests the necessary scheduling information for Cardinal Direct. A list of fully approved courses for Winter 2008 is included with the form.

Application to Teach Fully-online Courses

Faculty Application Form (.RTF document)

Faculty members who elect to teach online or hybrid courses must be approved to teach in that environment by the Vice President for Academic Affairs. No faculty member is required to teach online and both fulltime and adjunct faculty are eligible to do so. In order to facilitate successful online experiences for both faculty and students, professional training opportunities are available and described further in the application materials.

How to apply:

  1. A faculty member who wishes to apply to teach online must fill out the application form attached to this message or available from the dean’s secretaries. The form should be filled out electronically.
  2. The form must be signed by the faculty member, department chair, and the dean.
  3. Application to teach online courses implies a willingness to complete all training requirements as described in the application form.
  4. Since this is a new process, any faculty member who wishes to teach online must apply. Those faculty who currently teach online will be eligible for immediate full approval, assuming they have completed all training requirements.

Once fully approved, faculty do NOT need to apply again even if they are teaching a new course.
