Living with Roommates
Living on campus provides each resident student the opportunity to enjoy a complete collegiate experience.
The following statement of Resident Student Rights and Responsibilities defines the minimum expectations of residents in actualizing individual freedoms, without placing constraints upon the rights of other residents. The Roommate Agreement that follows is a tool that can be used by resident students and the Res Life staff to ensure communication among roommates takes place
Each resident student has the right to engage in those physical, educational and social pursuits that are a necessary part of his or her University life. However, these rights carry with them a reciprocal responsibility on the part of the individual to insure those same rights for other residents.
Resident Student Rights and Responsibilities
- The RIGHT to read and to study free from undue interference in one's room/suite/apartment. Unreasonable noise and other distractions inhibit the exercise of this right.
- THE RIGHT to sleep without disturbance from noise, guests of suitemates/roommates, etc.
- THE RIGHT to expect that a suitemate/roommate will respect one's personal belongings.
- THE RIGHT to a clean environment in which to live.
- THE RIGHT to free access to one's suite/room and facilities without pressure from a suitemate/roommate.
- THE RIGHT to personal privacy.
- THE RIGHT to host guests with the exception that guests are to respect the rights of host's suitemates/roommates.
- THE RIGHT for redress of grievances. Housing and Residential Life staff are available for assistance in settling conflicts.
- THE RIGHT to be free from fear of intimidation, physical and/or emotional harm.
- THE RIGHT to expect reasonable cooperation in the use of accommodations and amenities provided in each unit.
2007-2008 Roommate/Suitemate Agreement
Freshman roommates are required to complete a Roommate/Suitemate Agreement within the first two weeks of the fall semester. This document guides new roommates through a discussion of topics that have been known to create conflicts among resident students, such as using each other's belongings, cleaning habits, hosting guests and more. Resident Assistants are available to assist in facilitating the Agreement, if requested. The Residential Life staff may require that residents experiencing disagreements in their living conditions to complete the Roommate Agreement as part of the conflict resolution process.
