Meet Ying-Hsuan (Karen) Chen, from Taiwan. Karen is in the MBA program and says that her U.S. degree will help her “create her own future.” Her career plans involve international banking, a highly competitive business. In addition to her MBA, Karen notes that her time in the States will allow her to improve her English, which will also give her more opportunities.
Karen has found the MBA professors to be excellent. She has particularly enjoyed the organizational behavior class with Dr. Joseph Ofori-Dankwa, and global business classes with Dr. George Puia. In fact, she traveled with Dr. Puia and other MBA students to Russia in the spring of 2007 to meet with international business managers.
Of her classmates, Karen says that SVSU students are extremely nice and adds “I have had a lot of opportunity to be involved in real American life. American students are open-minded to other cultures, and like to try my cooking.” And when Karen isn’t studying or cooking for friends, she likes to shop and go to the movies.
Meet Siddharth (Sid) Joshi, junior electrical engineering student from India. Sid also works as an International Student Assistant in the Office of International Programs where his job is to help make international students comfortable.
Sid says that when he was looking at American universities, he wanted a smaller school that would give more attention to the students and where there would be interaction with faculty. SVSU’s affordable tuition made it the perfect choice for Sid.
Sid admits that his first semester was a bit overwhelming but that he took advantage of club sports and met new friends playing soccer, volleyball and table tennis. Sid lives on-campus and admits that part of his learning has not only been in the classroom, but first-time experiences like cooking and laundry. A nearby Indian store with many recognizable ingredients makes meals feel a little bit more like home. Sid also likes listening to music and hanging out with friends.
