Important Information for Students

REMINDER: SVSU allows students to enroll in course when students have course pre-requisites in progress. After grading each semester, student registrations for later semesters are reviewed. Students who have not received a "C" grade in pre-requisite courses will be dropped from the next course.

REMINDER: All students have an SVSU e-mail account. University offices use this account as an official means of communication. Students are responsible for checking their SVSU e-mail account frequently.

Graduation Application Deadlines for Fall 2014: July 25, 2014.

Each candidate for a degree should file a written application, accompanied by the $56.00 graduation fee, in the Registrar’s Office beginning April 7. The application deadline for Fall 2014 graduation is July 25, 2014.The sooner that you apply, the sooner that your graduation audit will be completed. All documentation and official transcripts of transferred credits must be on file in the Registrar’s Office at the time the application is submitted. Late applications and documentation may cause the candidate to be considered for a later graduation date. The Commencement Program will be ready for publication on October 3, 2014; applicants after that date will not appear in the program.

Commencement date: December 12, 2014, 7:30 p.m.

mySVSU Self Service (Cardinal Direct)

The Self Service (Cardinal Direct) section within the mySVSU portal provides students with many features including the ability to add/drop courses, determine course availability, view academic history, view account balances, and make payments.  Commonly used features within the Self Service (Cardinal Direct) section are summarized below:

  • Course Schedule - The "Course Schedule Lookup" feature can be used to determine course availability.
  • Registration - Class schedules can be viewed, courses can be added and/or dropped, and registration eligibility can be determined.
  • Housing - The Housing Residents Directory can be viewed.
  • Academic Profile - Academic history (including transcript) can be viewed and degree audit can be performed.
  • Financial Profile - Account balances can be viewed, payments on outstanding balances can be made with a credit card or an e-check, Cardinal and Graduate Payment Plan enrollments can be completed, etc.  Please note: SVSU does not mail printed class schedules or tuition bills; all courses may be dropped for non-payment of any balance due. You are responsible for dropping courses you do not want. DO NOT assume that someone will drop courses for you.
  • Financial Aid - Missing financial aid information can be viewed, financial aid award letters can be accepted/rejected online, and a paper version of the financial aid award letter can be printed.

Registration Eligibility

All students must be currently admitted to SVSU prior to registering. Students whose last semester of attendance was prior to the Summer 2012 must file an application for readmission in the Registrar’s Office to register for Fall 2014. Students whose last semester of attendance was prior to Fall 2011 must file an application for readmission in the Registrar's Office to register for Winter 2014. Students who have been academically dismissed from SVSU must contact the Registrar’s Office to be considered for readmission after two full semesters.

All obligations to SVSU offices must be cleared prior to registration. All SVSU courses must be registered in accordance with this schedule. Courses beginning during the semester must be registered for during the current registration periods.

Directed study and tutorial applications are available in the Registrar’s Office. The applications should be completed and submitted to the Registrar’s Office with the course request form according to the registration schedule. Directed study and tutorial registrations for Fall 2014 will be accepted beginning April 7, 2014, and during later registration periods; Winter 2014 directed study and tutorial registrations will be accepted beginning October 28, 2013, and during later registration periods.

Check proposed courses to insure you have met all prerequisites or have them in progress at SVSU. Students who do not receive a "C" in a prerequisite course will be dropped from the later course. Students will not be allowed to register for a course without the prerequisite unless they have written permission of the course instructor on a registration form.

Courses numbered below 100 are not included in degree credits earned. The computer system does not count current credits toward class standing.

Academic Advisement and Basic Skills Policies

Students on academic probation are required to receive academic advising prior to registering. Probationary students who fail to meet with an advisor will be blocked from registration. Each undergraduate student must complete all Basic Skills testing prior to registration or registration will be blocked. Freshmen and undecided students should consult with an academic advisor; for assistance, contact the Academic Advisement Center at (989) 964-4286.

Withdrawal from Courses, Non-Refund

Students are academically and financially responsible for all their registrations. Please refer to the semester calendars for course withdrawal deadlines.

Course Cancellations

Courses that do not meet minimum enrollment standards as of the end of the last day of registration before the semester begins (January 8, 2014 for Winter 2014) will be canceled. An SVSU representative will attempt to contact students who have enrolled in canceled courses.

Veterans Information

A student eligible for veterans educational benefits should submit a request for certification to the Registrar’s Office. Credit hours needed for benefits are:

Full time 12 credit hours 9 credit hours
Three-quarter time 9-11 credit hours 7-8 credit hours
Half time 6-9 credit hours 5-6 credit hours
Less than half time 5 credit hours or less 4 credit hours or less


Tuition and Fees and Payment Policies

Tuition and fee rates are set by the Board of Control and are subject to change without notice. Tuition and fee rates, payment policies and payment instructions are listed on our web site at Campus Financial Services Center. Credit hour cost is determined by the level of the course, not the student's class standing.

SVSU offices cannot accept credit card payments. Payment in cash or by check may be made at the Campus Financial Services Center, 1st floor Wickes Hall. Credit card payments and e-check payments may be made online within the "Financial Profile" feature of mySVSU's "Self Service (Cardinal Direct)" section.

Payment Deadline for Fall 2014: Payment either in person or online must be received by 6 p.m.,Wednesday, July 30, 2014. Payment by mail must be received by July 30 and addressed to: SVSU Cashier’s Office, 7400 Bay Road, University Center, MI 48710. Postmarks will not be honored. When paying by mail, please include your student ID number with your check or money order.

Payment Deadline for Winter 2014: Payment either  in person or online must be received by 6 p.m., Wednesday, December 4, 2013.

For the Winter 2014 semester, students who have outstanding balances after the December 4. 2013 payment deadline, will be dropped from their classes.

Scholarships and financial aid may not fully cover tuition, fees, and other costs (e.g., housing). Students receiving financial aid through the Office of Scholarships and Student Financial Aid must pay any balance due by the 6 p.m. deadline, December 4 2013 (for the Winter 2014 semester), to avoid having courses dropped.

Students who have all of their tuition and fees paid by the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid, and do not desire to attend SVSU Fall or Winter semesters, must inform the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid prior to the first day of the semester and drop their courses. Only the Registrar’s Office is authorized to drop courses for students; no other office or staff member can drop courses for a student. To be dropped from a course, students must file a course withdrawal in the Registrar’s Office, or inform the Registrar’s Office in writing by mail or fax. Written notification must include the student’s name, Social Security Number, course information (line number and course name), and the student’s signature. You are financially obligated to pay for any courses from which you do not officially withdraw.

Students who register during Registration/Schedule Adjustment or Late Registration Add/Drop are required to make payment in full at the Campus Financial Services Center or by credit card or e-check using the "Financial Profile" within mySVSU's Self Service (Cardinal Direct) section. Courses not paid for may be dropped.

Student Employment

In Case of Emergency

In case of an emergency requiring police and/or medical assistance, contact Saginaw Central Dispatch at 911 (from off campus), or 9-911 (from on campus).

Public Safety Report

As required by the Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act of 1990, the Department of Public Safety distributes an annual Crime Awareness Report that describes campus criminal activity and related safety issues. For a copy of the report, call (989) 964-4141 or view online.

Voter Registration

SVSU encourages all students to exercise their right to vote. If you have not registered to vote, you now are able to obtain Voter Registration forms at the University. The forms are available in the Student Association Office, Campus Life Center, Evening Services and Registrar’s Office.

Closing Campus During Adverse Weather

Adverse weather conditions, especially those associated with Michigan winters, may affect the normal operations of the University. If adverse conditions necessitate cancellation or closing, the decision to do so will be made prior to 6:30 a.m. for day classes (those beginning before 4 p.m.) and by 2:30 p.m. for evening classes.

Student Counseling Center

The Student Counseling Center serves as a Mental Health and Substance Abuse referral resource for students. Counseling Center staff provide assessments, crisis intervention, community referrals and psychoeducational classes. All services are confidential. In addition, prevention and educational programs are offered to the campus community. Visit for a detailed description of services.
