| Popular Author and Black America Scholar Headlines MLK Events at SVSU |
| Georgetown University professor and popular author Michael Eric Dyson will speak Wednesday, Jan. 14 as part of the 2009 Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration at Saginaw Valley State University. His talk begins at 7 p.m. in the Malcolm Field Theatre for Performing Arts. A leading scholar on black America, Dyson’s latest book, “April 4, 1968: Martin Luther King Jr.’s Death and How It Changed America,” made The New York Times bestseller list and was hailed by The Washington Post as “an excellent sociological primer on institutionalized racism in America.” He also made the Times bestseller list for a previous book, “Is Bill Cosby Right? Or Has the Black Middle Class Lost Its Mind?” A Detroit native, Dyson is an American Book Award recipient and two-time NAACP Image Award winner. He has been named one of the 150 most powerful African-Americans by Ebony magazine. Dyson is frequently seen on television with appearances ranging from network news programs such as “The Today Show” and “Nightline” to cable shows “The O’Reilly Factor,” “Def Poetry Jam” and “The Colbert Report.” His eloquent writing inspired Vanity Fair magazine to describe him as “one of the most graceful and lucid intellectuals writing on race and politics today.” Dyson also is a contributing editor of Time magazine. The talk is part of SVSU’s 2009 MLK Symposium with the theme of “Different Stories, Common Hopes.” Other events include a peace march on Thursday, Jan. 15 that begins at 6 p.m. in the Student Center rotunda, followed by a showing of the documentary “I Have a Dream” at 6:30 p.m. in Alumni Lounge. On Thursday, Jan. 29, SVSU will host 70 students from Doerr Elementary School in Buena Vista Township for a series of diversity lessons.
