Native American Hip Hop Photographer Coming to SVSU

A Native American with a focus on modern American culture will visit Saginaw Valley State University. Ernie Paniccioli, regarded by some as the "dean of hip hop photographers," will speak in the Alan W. Ott Auditorium of the Regional Education Center at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 1. The event is part of the SVSU’s Native American History Month celebration.

A Native American native to New Jersey, Paniccioli made a career in photography, beginning in 1973 when his 35-millimeter camera captured the graffiti art that dominated New York City.

Since that time, he has watched the evolution of hip hop culture. Paniccioli’s lens documented the genre’s biggest attractions including the popular 1970s Manhattan nightclub, Grandmaster Flash at the Roxy, the legendary dance group, Rock Steady Crew, and celebrities such as Tupac Shakur, The Notorious B.I.G., Queen Latifah, Eminem and Lauren Hill.

Paniccioli has also photographed other national stars such as Frank Sinatra, Liza Minelli, Jimmy Carter, Andy Warhol, John F. Kennedy Jr., Britney Spears, and the Dalai Lama.

Paniccioli’s work has appeared in publications like "The New York Times," "Newsweek," "Life," "Rolling Stone," "Spin," "Vibe," "Ebony" and others. He has served as chief photographer for "Word Up! Magazine" since 1989.

With talents extending beyond the camera, Paniccioli also is a painter, public speaker and historian. He was chosen by rap artist KRS1 to serve as spokesman for The Temple of Hip Hop peace conference in May 2001. He also moderated the Meeting of the Minds at the Zulu Nation’s 27th aniversary.

Paniccioli’s visit is sponsored by the Michigan Department of Career Development’s King-Chavez-Parks Initiative, the Delta College Library/Learning Information Center and Human Relations Committee, and SVSU’s Offices of Student Life and Diversity Programs.

The lecture is open to the public. Admission is free of charge. For more information, contact the SVSU Office of Diversity Programs at 989-964-4068.
