GEAR UP/ College Day Program

GEAR Up stands for "Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs." The program was designed to promote early college awareness in public school districts, beginning with the 7th grade cohort, and to continue following those students through their senior year of high school. During this time, the students will be introduced to the various aspects of post-secondary education (e.g. admission requirements, financial aid opportunities, career exploration, student life activities, etc.) as well as the necessary skills to better prepare them for college.

Scholarship Opportunities

Students have the possibility of becoming eligible for one of 11 full ride scholarships to any Michigan college or university of their choice at the end of the six-year program. This is an excellent opportunity for students that are interested in attending college. However, this depends upon the student's participation in the program, which includes regular attendance and full participation at all GC/CD events from 7th grade through 12th grade.

Student Workshops

GU/CD participants are brought out to SVSU's campus four times a year for college preparatory events and activities. We normally have the visits divided into two per semester. The workshops will usually cover the following topics:

  • Scholarships/Financial Aid
  • Career Exploration
  • Recreational/Student Life Programs
  • Community College/Private Institution Visit

Our fellow staff members at SVSU, along with various speakers from the community are very instrumental in helping our program expose our students to the many opportunities that await them in their future endeavors. The visits usually last half day, with lunch and transportation included. It is an excellent way for the students to get a feel for the "college experience."

Parent Involvement

It is imperative that parent involvement in the program is equivalent to the student involvement. All students, teachers, and administrators are encouraged to get parents enthused about the GU/CD Program, and to have them sign the pledge forms to show their commitment as well. There will be parent workshops held throughout the academic year to educate parents on the many opportunities available to them in order for their students to attend college.
