Multicultural Mentor Program
In fall 2008, Minority Student Services will be introducing a new mentor program for incoming minority freshmen. The Multicultural Mentor Program is designed to support students in their transition to Saginaw Valley State University and to offer guidance as students begin to define their goals and strive for academic success. Mentees will be given the chance to enhance their college experience through active participation in one-on-one interaction, small group meetings and other social activities.
The program will match freshmen with a mentor (junior, senior, staff or faculty member). The mentee and mentor will communicate on a regular basis and meet at least once a month or as often as both determine to be helpful and possible. The mentee and mentor will also attend activities and other social events together.
This program is a perfect way for incoming freshmen to expand their view of the university, connect with upperclassmen, staff and faculty members, meet students and increase their involvement in various areas of the university.
Mentee Criteria
Those interested in becoming a mentee for the Multicultural Mentor Program must meet the following criteria:
- Incoming freshman
- Full-time undergraduate student
- Participate in cluster meetings and Multicultural Mentor Program activities
- Attend the Match & Mingle scheduled for August 23, 2008
- Be willing to learn new things, obtain another perspective; be resposive to suggestions and constructive cristicism
- Exhibit the ability to work effectively with cluster leaders, mentors and other mentees
- Possess a strong interest and desire to make a positive transition to SVSU

Mentor Criteria
Those interested in becoming a mentor for the Multicultural Mentor Program must meet the following criteria:
- Junior or Senior class standing, SVSU faculty or staff member
- 2.5 cumulative GPA or higher
- Full-time undergraduate
- Participate in cluster meetings and Multicultural Mentor Program activities
- Attend the Match & Mingle (August 23)
- Exhibit leadership potential and a strong commitment to the mission of the Multicultural Mentor Program
- Exhibit the ability to work effectively with cluster leaders, other mentors and mentees
- Possess a strong interest and desire to help minority students make a positive transition to SVSU
