Tangents and Waves: The Art of David Barr and Diane Carr exhibition from October 3, 2008 to January 31, 2009.

David Barr

Barr taught in the art department at Macomb Community College for forty years, taught classes at Wayne State University and Lawrence Technological University, and lectured at universities throughout the Midwest and in England.

He is the founder and artistic director of the Michigan Legacy Art Park in Thompsonville, MI, a wooded 30-acre nonprofit sculpture park where Michigan artists are invited to produce works which deal with the history of Michigan.

Barr’s artwork spans Michigan and the world. His Revolution I and Revolution II are located in the Chrysler world headquarters, Auburn Hills, MI and the European headquarters in Brussels, Belgium respectively. The Four Corners Project is a global piece that promotes world peace and understanding through art. Transcending, a 62’ stainless steel sculpture is located in Detroit’s city center; Soaring is in front of the Flint Airport; Synergy is at the Dennos Museum Center in Traverse City; Strata at the Krasl Art Center in St. Joseph, MI; Sunset Cube on the grounds of the Meadowbrook Music Festival in Rochester, MI; and Galileo in the ancient town hall of Pisa, Italy. He recently completed and installed a monumental stone sculpture at the entrance of Michigan Tower on Michigan Avenue in Chicago.

Nine documentary films have been made about Barr’s work. His global projects are Arctic Arc in Wales, Alaska and Naukan, Soviet Union; SunSweep on the USA/Canada border at Campabello Island/New Brunswick, Northwest Angle, MN and Pointe Roberts, WA; Four Corners Project installed at Greenland, South Africa, Irian Jaya (Indonesia New Guinea) and Easter Island; and Global Gear installed at Chrysler World Headquarters in Auburn Hills, MI and the European Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium.

David Barr lives in Novi, MI in a home/studio he built himself surrounded by his four-acre sculpture garden.

Diane Carr

Carr taught painting, drawing and design at Macomb Community College, Mt Clemens MI; was a painting instructor at Wayne State University; a guest lecturer at Mott Community College, Flint, MI, Center for Creative Studies, Detroit, and Cranbrook Academy of Art. She was painting coordinator at Ox Box Summer Workshop in Saugatuck, MI and Visiting Artist, Wesleyan University, Bloomington, IL

Carr’s commissions include Skystone, an outdoor sculpture for the New Buffalo Welcome Center, MI and Sky Crystals, 4 wall sculptures for 15 ft. x 46 ft. wall at One23 Restaurant, Grosse Pointe, MI. Her work is in the collections of the Karmanos Cancer Institute in the Detroit Medical Center, The Detroit Institute of Arts, Dennos Museum Center in Traverse City, MI, and Southwestern Michigan College, Dowagiac.

Carr’s work has been included in more than 35 group and 6 one-woman exhibits in Michigan and Canada.

For this exhibition Carr has produced a new body of work titled "Sculptural Wall Gestures."
