Career Opportunities

Mechanical engineers hold a healthy portion of engineering jobs in the United States and in Michigan. These jobs are in a variety of industrial, energy, construction, business and management activities such as manufacturing of machinery, transportation equipment, electrical equipment, instruments, production/fabrication of metal parts, electric power generation, air conditioning, management and business services, etc. The federal government, the military, aviation and space exploration industries also hire mechanical engineers.

Employment of mechanical engineers is projected to grow in all occupations; particularly in energy sector, air conditioning, and manufacturing of improved/efficient machinery and machine tools. Employment of mechanical engineers in management, business and engineering services is expected to grow faster than average as other industries increasingly hire these firms to solve their engineering problems. In addition to job openings from growth, many openings should result from the need to replace workers who retire, transfer to other occupations or leave the labor force.

Statistical data on the future labor market for mechanical engineers and their compensation can be found on the web sites of the US and Michigan Departments of Labor, and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers:
