  13. National Aquarium in Baltimore
    This site has excellent interactive games that promote environmental awareness. The games are designed around the following topics: seahorses, sea jellies, the rainforest, oceans, and deadly venoms. This site is appropriate for upper elementary students.
  14. Square of Life: Studies in Local and Global Environments
    Studies in Local and Global Environments is an Internet-based collaborative project in which students will investigate their local environment and share that information with other students from around the country and the world.

  1. Animal Information Database
    This site is part of the Sea World/Busch Gardens Education Series.  The site contains links to research projects; activities just for fun; fast facts; teacher resources; and links to a database resource with information on animals, fish, birds, and endangered species.
  2. Anatomy of the Human Body
    The Bartleby.com edition of Gray’s Anatomy of the Human Body features 1,247 vibrant engravings—many in color—from the classic 1918 publication, as well as a subject index with 13,000 entries. The site includes information on each topic and numerous diagrams.
  3. Bird Migration Site
    Anyone can track migrating birds as they move through the Mid-Atlantic Region. This is a great information site on bird migration: what it is, why you should care, how you can help migrating birds, and reporting your observations. The highlight of this site is the fantastic radar images of migrating birds. Links help you understand the radar images.
  4. Bird of the Week
    A great place to find interesting facts, bird songs, and pictures. A new bird is added every week.
  5. Butterflies of North America
    This site contains information and pictures about North American Butterflies and where they are found.
  6. Classroom Antarctica
    This is a nice resource with outstanding printable pdf files. The files contain lots of fun information and activities dealing with Antarctica and its ecosystem. It is geared mainly for upper elementary to middle school students.

    These links are privided as starting points for searching for information. They are not comprehensive, but should serve as a guide for getting into the vast amount of biology and related information that is available on the Internet.     A NOVA project that discusses how sea life can live in extreme conditions without sunlight.  A good sight for information and photographs.

    This site provides a great deal of information on populations within habitats. There is a virtual biome area which provides information on specific information on the six biomes. The pictures at this site are very good.
  14. National Wildlife Federation
    This is a good site for teachers to find information about the National Wildlife Federation, but it also has links to websites for setting up schoolyard habitats, and other information links on various groups of animals and ecosystems. Easy to navigate.

    This is an exceptional search site for all types of ocean life. It includes sections dealing with ocean news and information, aqua facts, ask a scientist, and other ocean links.

  18. The San Diego Zoo
    This website is appropriate for all students. It offers several virtual tours, many videos, and lots of information on the animals.
  19. UCMP a History of Evolutionary Thought
    This site is an excellent source on the history of evolution. If any student has an interest in the founders of the theory they can go here for research. It also explains how cladistics works and how the first paleantologists found dinosaurs.

    Outstanding site for animations and movies about biological processes.  Includes animations for cell structures and function, metabolism, proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and much more.  A movie link at the bottom of the page has excellent short films of common protists, showing movements and eating habits, as well as upclose pictures of cilia and flagella movements.
  3. Biology of Plants New
    This site has pictures, illustrations, and video clips of seeds, plants, pollination, and other plant related topics. It is appropriate for use at the elementary or middle school levels.
  4. How Stuff Works New
    This site contains real world videos that demonstrate a variety of life science concepts. The videos include Discovery Channel , NASA, Science Channel, HowStuffWorks, and Mythbusters segments. It is appropriate for use at any grade level.
  5. Terra New
    This website provides webcasts, short video and video clips on a variety of science topics. The majority of the topics covered are concerned with life sciences but there are applications to all the sciences.
  6. The San Diego Zoo
    This website is appropriate for all students. It offers several virtual tours, many videos, and lots of information on the animals.

  1. Anatomist Project
    At the University of Washington's biology department the "structural information group" cleans up and colorizes a cadaver sectioning. The 3-D views of the brain, knee, and thoracic organs (including the heart) can be supplemented by outlines, labels and a few animations, and there's a quiz to make sure your paying attention.

    This site is site filled with animations. Teachers can select from a vast amount of various animations within each category. This is an excellent teacher resource, along with being extremely informative for the students.

  2. Dennis Kunkel's Microscopy
    Dr. Kunkel's electron microscope and light microscopy pictures are as fascinating as they are tiny. And while he does the bacteria and virus thing pretty well, his specialty seems to be little creatures. You haven't seen a garden spider or a mosquito until you've seen one illuminated and hued like this.

A graphical, interactive version of this timeline, containing links to some classic Science articles and news coverage from the early genomics era, is also available on Science's Functional Genomics Web site.

Searches/Explorations/Investigations

  1. Ask a Biologist New
    Other features of the site are likely to be more useful. For example, readings on a variety of topics in biology, authored by faculty at ASU, are accessibly written and appropriately brief. A scoreable quiz option accompanies each. Only a few read as if from a textbook. Backyard experiments vary in terms of inquiry design. Some are modeling exercises (Pressing Plants and Composting) while others are data tabulations (Air Pollution and Your Dog's Personality). Two are authentically launched by an investigative question (Pocket Seed Viewer and Water Temperature and Density). A sampling of experiments borrowed from the Access Excellence site are included, and are excellent.
    For younger learners, there are downloadable coloring pages depicting biological phenomena. A mystery images game and gallery inspire the imagination. Finally, a number of Web links are provided for deeper pursuits.

  3. Genetic Decision Making Model 
    This site teaches students to use a decision making model, students will learn to stop and think and then make the decision based on the values they hold.
  4. Project Challenge - Life in the Extreme
    Systems are addressed in this webquest. Students are on a mission to select a planet where life can exist because the Earth is becoming to crowded or polluted. Students research carrying capacities, the nine planets, extremophiles, etc. Then prepare a website or PowerPoint presentation of their new planet. This is best suited for 7th and 8th grade students.
  5. Virtual Fish Tank
    This site allows students to create his/her own fish by manipulating different characteristics. These fish can then be "released" into a community tank. Each fish is tagged and can later be caught and get details of it's life. Using information from the entire class, the fish can be grouped by features and determine which of the features affects different aspects of its life.
