Multiply and Divide Fractions

    1. I want a credit card - or do I?
      Students will pretend to borrow $1000.00 on a credit card. They will pretend to make minimum payments for a year. When they're done, they will make a pie chart showing how much of their payments reduced their debt, and how much was interest. A student worksheet, resources, and lesson extensions are included. Students will be writing and solving one-step linear equations in one variable. This includes a teacher lesson plan and is a student activity.

      This investigation illustrates the use of iteration, recursion and algebra to model and analyze a changing fish population. Graphs, equations, tables, and technological tools are used to investigate the effect of varying parameters on the long-term population. Students will complete a numerical analysis, a graphical analysis, and a symbolic analysis from the data.

      This interactive sites includes an activity allowing students to manipulate a number line in order to solve equations. Students may choose the difficulty of the equations they wish to solve. Some teacher direction may be needed initially although the directions are clear. This site uses JAVA applets.

      This site presents an interactive mathematical problem solving series. This site has four different locations. Each location has two objectives, a mathematical objective and a game objective. Both of these objectives must be accomplished in order to progress further into the game. The student writes simple algebraic expression and then substitutes in integers to solve the problems. The students have access to the use of a calculator on the screen. The student receives immediate feedback on correctness of the problem. The student has access to helpful hints and can redo the problem until they have it correct.

      This interactive site allows students to work through a tutorial followed by practice problems they can complete on-line. Correct answers are given as well as help in solving equations if students have difficulty.

Use Exponents

    1. AAA Math: Comparing Standard Notation and Scientific Notation Numbers
      At this site students can practice comparing numbers in both standard notation and scientific notation. A brief tutorial is followed by interactive quizzes which are timed.
    2. CERN'S Powers of Ten
      Site begins with a picture of a flower that is 1 meter square. Using a ruler, students can zoom in or out by powers of ten. The picture zooms out to a picture of a galaxy that is 150 million light years across and in to protons and neutrons in the nucleus.
    3. Converting from Decimal Numbers to Scientific Notations
      This site is an activity for the students to convert a decimal into a scientific notation. The process is explained, and problems are given for the students to answer. Their work is timed, and an assessment is given for the activity.
    4. Lost King of the Maya: Long Count Calendar System
      Students will calculate the date of their birth in the Maya Long Count calendar system which uses a base 20 number system. The website is not interactive but includes teacher resources, worksheets and additional links.

      Nice, easy, and quick to use interactive lesson on Exponents. Students can see the lesson and practice exponents. When page loads select E on bottom of page and look for exponents. It's easy and fun!
    6. Math Files - Grid Game
      This is an intereactive game for students. Students need to find multiples, factors, squares, cubes, roots, evens, odds, triangular numbers, etc., and that meet the given condition (such as: find the multiples of 10 that are also multiples of 20.)
    7. Scientific Notation
      This program gives a very good defination for scientific notation.  It shows examples of how to convert from numbers to scientific notation and from scientific notation back to numbers.  Sample paper and pencil problems are available along with several sample problems requiring the use of calculators.

      This site allows the student to play a tic tac toe game that is based on powers of 2 & 3. If the student is incorrect in his/her answer, the game will explain what the exponent should look like. This site can also do roots as well. Understand Rational Numbers and Their Location on the Number Line
