Understand the Coordinate Plane

  1. A.RP.06.02 Plot ordered pairs of integers and use ordered pairs of integers to identify points in all four quadrants of the coordinate plane.
    1. Count On
Worm Hunt is great for practicing the coordinate grid.  The students choose a coordinate pair to try to find a worm.  They get a response to let them know how far they are from the worm, thus the students have to practice figuring distances between points on the grid.  This would be an excellent game for 5th and 6th graders.
    2. Latitude, Longitude, and Mapmaking
This lesson requires students to review the concepts of latitude and longitude and to use these concepts to create maps of different countries on the computer. They'll conclude by discussing the reasons why it's important to understand latitude and longitude and by creating quizzes in which other students can locate "mystery" places that they map on the computer. The Crack the Code activity has students using a map and latitude/longitude to track down some theives.
    3. Taxicab Treasure Hunt
A treasure is hidden in the city. Students are given a map which shows the streets of the city. After picking an intersection, the computer will state how far it is to the treasure by using the shortest distance in blocks. Students need to use this new information, along with the old information, to determine where the treasure is. Students are then asked to write an explanation of the process that they used to locate the treasure. Although this explanation cannot be submitted to the creators of the site, the teacher could informally assess students' problem-solving skills by reading their explanations. Student can also read what other students have written in the past.

    2. California Here We Come!
This site allows teams of students to choose any state capital on the east coast as their starting point. They travel west stopping at each state capital along the way and record miles traveled. Each student group will create a chart or table showing the number of miles traveled from state capital to state capital and then total numbers of miles driven. Lesson plan, evaluation, extensions, and student activity sheets are included. Skills used will involve solving linear equations and inequalities over the rational numbers, as well as solving multistep problems involving rate, average speed, distance and time, or direct variation. This includes a teacher lesson plan and is a student activity.
    3. Grap Mole Game
Introduction to Coordinate plane. Learn about the X and Y axis and how to plot points on the graph. Game comes in different levels of difficulty. The game is a good review, students will have fun while learning coordinate plane.
    4. Linear Inequalities
Manipulate and visualize the solution sets of linear inequalities in slope-intercept form.
    5. Slope Intercept Form
Interactive tool to experiment with the slope and intercept of a line. See how the slope of a line is calculated.
    6. Using Algebra and Discrete Mathematics to Investigate Population Changes in a Trout Pond
This investigation illustrates the use of iteration, recursion and algebra to model and analyze a changing fish population. Graphs, equations, tables, and technological tools are used to investigate the effect of varying parameters on the long-term population. Students will complete a numerical analysis, a graphical analysis, and a symbolic analysis from the data.
  3. A.FO.06.13 Understand that multiplying or dividing both sides of an equation by the same non-zero number creates a new equation that has the same solutions.
    1. Algebra Help
This site gives students a step by step description of description of distributive property, order of operations solving equations, combining like terms, F.O.I.L method, simplifying exponents, and substitution method of solving equations. Students have an opportunity to work on problemns after the short lessons. This site has many different calculators available that will show all work on a problem typed in by the student just like a student would do the work.
    2. E-Lab : Two Step Equations
Students will apply the additive inverse and multiplicative inverse properties  to solve two-step equations.
    3. Molecular Expressions, Science, Optics, and You
This site takes you through a step by step lesson to teach powers of 10 and has an interactive applet that allows you to view several things under a micrsoscope!
    4. The Derivation of Pi
This site contains lesson plans and resources for a student investigation of Pi. Directions are clear, directions for creating student tools for use on a computer are included as well as hyperlinks to other sites containing more information about the history of Pi.
