Third Grade

  1. "Recognize the Basic Elements of Geometric Objects"
    1. A+ Math -- Games -- Matho-Geometry Version
      In this site, students can use their knowledge of geometric shapes to play the game called Matho. Appropriate for students in grades 3-5. If the answer is correct the space is filled with an "X", if the answer is incorrect the student is given another shape to find. Immediate feedback is given the student.
    2. A+ Math -- Flashcards
      Students are shown a specific geometric shape and asked to recognize it from a large list of choices. Immediate feedback is given to the student. Appropriate for grades 3 -5.
    3. About Symmetry and Pattern (Field Patterns)
      This site is appropriate for upper elementary grades.  Examples of shapes and letters are shown and how they create patterns and how rotating the letters create a change in the pattern.
    4. Activity by GLCE: Geometry New
      Outstanding. This website is designed to provide math links for students, guidance for parents, and standards based resources for teachers. Mr. Maffesoli compiled all of the links contained in this site. Resources for each specific GLCE are sorted and displayed in an easy to use chart.
    5. BBC School's MegaShapes
      Outstanding  Excellent geometry site for ages 4 to 11.  Follow the Investigate link for student activities that involve multiple choice questions about familiar regular shapes and irregular shapes.  While students complete these activites, they have access to a shape book that provides drawings and information about each shape.  Click on the bouncing triangle for interactive java activities that allow students to use their knowledge about shapes, symmetry, and transformations.  Follow the teacher link for information about the skills that are covered at this website, along with printable activities and resources.
    6. Geometry and Measurement
      This site is all about geometry and measurement. All of the sites listed on this page are interactive for K-5. They include: Tessellate, Polygon Playground, Shape Cave, and Shape Explorer. This is an outstanding site for a variety of interactive mathematics activites.
    7. Making Triangles and Electronic Geoboard
      This is a teacher directed site that would be good for K on up. With teacher direction the child can use an electronic geoboard to make, change, transform and explore shapes.
    8. MathsNet Interactive Shape Version 1.0
      Outstanding! This site includes interactive activities for students that cover ALL of the Shape and Shape Relationship Benchmarks.

      This activity asks students to recognize parallel lines.

      Outstanding - Grades 3 and up. This interactive site allows students to explore and manipulate geometric shapes. Students are encouraged to compare and describe shapes according to their attributes.

      This is a very student friendly and fun site. Students build shapes by turning, flipping, and combining others to fill patterns. The site gives clues and encourages children by using positive sayings. Good for children 1st grade through 6th.
    12. Toon University
      This game focuses on two skills: identifying angles as acute, obtuse, or right angles,  and determining whether angles are congruent.  Students help the robot choose the right answer by firing missiles at spaceships
    13. Virtual Manipulatives Geometry
      This site contains activities for students to explore various geometric concepts using virtual manipulatives. Explanations for use and links to math standards are provided.

      This activity involves measuring the interior angles of a triangle. It allows the student to click and drag one angle of a triangle to see how changing it affects the measure of the other two angles of the triangle.It would be appropriate for use at the upper elementary level.
