Teacher Specialist

Qualification

The teacher specialists must be K-12 teachers with math and science content background and expertise, and with a minimum of 2 years classroom experience. A Masters degree is preferred with specific training and competence in a math or science content area, i.e. Algebra, Geometry, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Science, etc. Additionally, some recent experiences in Math or Science activities, such as Project SOLVE, MOLVE, AIMS, Math Your Way, etc. is required. Preference will be given to individuals who can address the broad needs in math or science education across the entire K-12 curriculum

Job Description

The teacher specialists will gather data on ongoing math and science activities in the service area, and develop mechanisms to share activities throughout the region. They will determine unmet needs in mathematics or science education and develop materials to meet those needs. There will also be time for teacher specialists to plan and develop their own creative ideas into mathematics and science projects. Teacher specialists will be asked to plan, design, order materials and supplies and develop appropriate science modules in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Earth Science to be used in the "Labs on Wheels" Project. They may also serve as demonstrators of these modules as the "Labs on Wheels" Project is implemented as a service to the participating schools of the Regional Math/Science Center. They will provide in-service training in science and mathematics areas with hands-on activities for teachers and enrichment activities for students. They will also act as a liaison to the K-12 schools and their districts in the service area which includes: Arenac, Bay, Midland, Saginaw and Tuscola counties.

Length of Appointment and Work Day

The length of the appointment will be one semester (First or Second). The schedule will normally be from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Flexibility will be allowed for school visitations and other related activities.
