| Brief Description of Facility | The Dow Gardens were started in 1899 by Herbert Dow, founder of The Dow Chemical Company. The Gardens, originally developed on eight acres of flat, sandy land, provided a creative outlet for Herbert Dow's interest in agriculture and design. He created gardens, ponds, and hills according to a simple philosophy that we still follow to this day: “never reveal the gardens' whole beauty at first glance.” Today, with more than 1700 varieties of plants on 110 acres, the Gardens are many things to many people. An oasis of serenity for quiet contemplation. An outdoor science classroom. A place for family togetherness. And much more. For school tours, contact Dow Gardens at least two weeks in advance. |
