Math Placement Tests

About the Math Placement Tests

Getting into the correct math class is very important to your success in college. Your math class should be neither below nor above your preparation level, and it should move you toward the completion of your degree progream. We want to make sure your math placement fits you and your needs as closely as possible.

Math Placement at SVSU will be based on your ACT math sub-score and/or an Algebra Placement Test that is administered during your orientation visit. A Calculus Readiness Test is given to those students with sufficiently high ACT math subscores or Algebra Placement Test scores.

Math Placement Retesting

If you are unhappy with your initial placement, a retesting option is available for those students who feel they were incorrectly placed. Students wishing to exercise the re-test option should know several things:

1. You have only one opportunity to do so.

2. Testing is done by appointment. In the summer the Math Resource Center offers testing most week days between 9AM and 4PM, Fridays 9AM to 2PM. Call the Math Resource Center at (989) 964-4648 to schedule a time that is convenient for you.

3. Special Test Dates for New Students:
For students that are coming from out of town and cannot make it to the Saginaw area before their move-in date, we will be open for testing after the August move-in dates:
Friday, August 28 from 10AM to 5PM
Saturday, August 29 from 8AM to 11AM
To register for one of these times contact the Math Resource Center, in Science East 106.
Phone: (989) 964-4648
Email: mathtutor(at)svsu.edu

4. You will be asked to show a picture ID before you take the placement re-test.

5. You are unlikely to improve your score unless you do some kind of preparation or review. You are strongly encouraged to review before taking the math placement re-test.

The Math Resource center offers algebra review problems and review workshops.
