Getting into the correct math class is VERY important to your success in college. Your math class should be interesting and challenging, and it should move you towards completion of your math requirements, but it should not be beyond your preparation level. We want to make sure your math placement fits you and your needs as closely as possible.
Math Placement at SVSU will be based on your ACT math sub-score and/or an Algebra Placement Test that is administered during your orientation visit. A Calculus Readiness Test is given to those students with sufficiently high ACT math subscores or Algebra Placement Test scores. For more information about how your initial mathematics placement is determined, click here.
If you think that you were incorrectly placed into a math class, the Math Resource Center offers one second-chance testing opportunity to each student. To take full advantage of this second-chance testing opportunity, you should feel free to access our math placement review materials, attend our review workshops, and/or come in and work with our tutors. You are unlikely to do well on the test, or to improve your score unless you do some kind of preparation or review. Thus, You are strongly encouraged to review before taking the math placement re-test.
You must register to take the Algebra Placement Test or the Calculus Readiness Test with the Math Resource Center. To register, call 964-4648 or email mathtutor(at)svsu.edu to schedule your test. We offer testing most weekdays between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm. Be sure to call and schedule an appointment.
We do not provide Calculus Readiness Test review materials, but here are some links to sites prepared by other institutions that can help you review:
