In fall 2009 SVSU welcomed another record-setting freshman class of 1,738 - a sharp increase from the 1,263 freshmen who enrolled in 2005. The average GPA and ACT scores of incoming students also continues to rise.

SVSU remains the most affordable public university in Michigan. For academic year 2009-2010, 75 percent of students receive some form of financial aid.

Athletics

SVSU fields 16 varsity teams. In addition, 13 student-initiated club sports teams have formed in sports ranging from equestrian to water skiing, and more than 1,470 students participated in intramural sports programs in 2008-09, an increase of nearly 40 percent over the prior year.

Residential Life

Incoming Freshmen Choosing to Live on Campus 70%

SVSU's residential facilities, which house more than 2,700 students, have been voted "Michigan's Best Residential Life" by Michigan Organization of Residence Halls Association (MORHA).

The number of students living on campus has skyrocketed from 645 in 1998 to nearly 2,700 this fall.

Some $17 million in new construction was added to the campus fall 2009 and the new $28 million Health & Human Services building is scheduled to open fall 2010.

This year's additions include a new University Health Center (a joint venture with Covenant HealthCare, $2.6 million); Living Center Southwest ($11.8 million) and an addition to the Arbury Fine Arts Center ($2.6 million).

SVSU impacts The Great Lakes Bay regional economy. Some 85 percent of SVSU's employees reside in the region and their total compensation is approximately $60 million.

Nearly 75 percent ($117.3 million) of SVSU's total revenue comes from outside the region, while two-thirds ($103.8 million) of expenses are spent within the region.

SVSU values experience in the community. During 2008-2009 more than 300 students were placed in off-campus career placements in internships and more than 2,000 students participated in civic engagement activities as volunteers.
