Director's News: Update  on the Library Construction and Renovation Project

As the new academic year gets underway, students, faculty and staff can expect to see great progress in the renovation and expansion of Zahnow Library over the coming weeks and months.  Here's a preview of what is happening on each floor.

First Floor….

Although delays can occur for any number of reasons, it is anticipated that the new Reference Services area will open up on the 1st floor in early October.  One of the current construction walls has come down, the Reference Desk has been relocated, and new furnishings for 18 online public access workstations have arrived.  The renovated Reference area also features our new Library Instruction Lab, equipped with 40 computers and an instructor's podium.  This new lab is described in a separate article in this issue of our newsletter.  The completion of the renovation of the Reference area will enable all of the Reference Services staff to move into their new offices, vacating their temporary quarters in Science West and across from the Circulation Desk in the library.  When the three rooms across from the Circulation Desk become available, they will be set up with the equipment needed to allow the viewing of videos by small groups of students.  The video collection will then be conveniently relocated to shelving adjacent to these Viewing Rooms.  A portion of the construction walls currently on the 1st floor will remain in place to enclose construction of the new main stairwell and a new elevator to reach the 4th floor.

Second Floor….

Renovation work continues on the 2nd floor with the goal of having our new Student Technology Center up and running by early November.  A separate article in this issue of the newsletter describes the Center, its mission and its services.  We also expect the 2nd floor entrance of the library to re-open during November, and to have in place in the center of the floor our new Periodicals Information Desk.  Next to the existing elevator, a construction wall will enclose work on the new stairway and new elevator, as on the 1st and 3rd floors.

Third Floor….

The timeline for the renovation work on the 3rd floor extends through the fall and on into the winter.  As portions of the floor are completed, shelving will be put up and parts of the book collection will be moved into those areas.  As books are shifted, their location codes in the online catalog will be updated.  When this floor is finished around March or April of next year, there will be several rooms available for group study in addition to study tables and comfortable seating.  There will also be a café area with vending machines for those who wish to take a break from studying.  It is hoped that at some time in the future, there will be a large enough customer base to support the cost of opening and running a real café.
