Historical New York Times Takes You Back to 1851

The New York Times has been known as the U.S. newspaper of record, reporting news and influencing readers around the world since 1851. One hundred fifty years of Pulitzer prize winning articles covering speeches, U.S. Supreme Court decisions, presidential press conferences, international news and more are provided.

This semester Zahnow Library added ProQuest’s Historical New York Times to the database collection. Purchased to complement the New York Times (InfoTrac) database, which covers current years with full-text for the past 365 days, the Historical New York Times provides access to full-page images in PDF form from the very first issue, September 18, 1851 to December 31, 2001.

Links to Historical New York Times can be found on the library's Databases web page (http://www.svsu.edu/library/dbases.html). Users may search abstracts, article titles, article text, article type and author with varied date ranges. Included with full-text articles, the database contains digital reproductions of displays and classified ads, comics and cartoons, photos, maps and graphics, and editorials and commentary.

A special one-time offer enabled the library to renew its on-going subscription to two ProQuest/UMI products (the NYT print index and the NYT microform) while adding Historical New York Times at a substantial cost savings for the entire package.
