Searching for SVSU History?
The Melvin J. Zahnow
Library and the Archives/Special Collections department are pleased to
announce the addition of three online databases that allow for the searching
of Saginaw Valley State University history. The student newspaper VALLEY
VANGUARD (1967 to present), the INTERIOR (1973 to present) and the Board
of Control Minutes (1965 to present) are available for searching at http://www.svsu.edu/library/archives/.
Do you have questions about some of the buildings, people or events that have occurred on campus? When you access the Archives Home Page there are three boxes: Search Criteria; Select an Archive and All Fields. Typing your query into the “Search Criteria” box and then selecting an Archive and clicking “Go” will present you with a listing of articles related to your topic in chronological order. You can search by subject, name, and date, Board Resolutions and/or Board Motions.
There is a “Help” box that you can use to refine your search. Some helpful hints include the use of quotes when searching for people, “Gilbertson, Eric” or events, “Baseball 1996”. To access the articles from the VALLEY VANGUARD and the INTERIOR, you will still need to come into the library. If you are searching for information in the Board of Control Minutes database, that information is available from December 1997 to present by clicking on the “Board of Control Minutes” box located on the left hand side of the Archives Home Page.
When the Archives Home Page is updated, we hope to have the “Subject Headings” used to create the entry points for the databases available for perusal.
The initial input of the databases was created with the help of Circulation staff over a three-year period with helpful insights from other library staff. The web versions were created by Matt Giddings from ITS. I thank everyone who helped with this project.
