April 6 - 12, 2003

More news

Please join us on Monday, April 7th, starting at 11:00 a.m., as we kick off National Library Week with ice cream (the treat is on us), and drawings for gift certificates and other prizes. Prizes and
ice cream have been donated by Zahnow Library staff and Campus Dining Services.

Now in its 45th year, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association and libraries across the country. NLW celebrates the uniqueness and the value of libraries in our communities. All types of libraries participate, including school libraries, public libraries, special libraries - such as medical, law, and corporate libraries, and college and university libraries. Each April the American Library Association chooses a theme to help promote the awareness of libraries and librarians, and their contributions to our nation. This year’s theme is “@ Your Library”, and is intended to portray libraries as places of learning, innovation, and opportunity.

The history of National Library Week goes back to the Eisenhower administration in the 1950’s. In 1955 a Gallup poll revealed that 61% of American adults had not read any books, except the Bible, in the preceding year. The implications of this in terms of an informed citizenry motivated a number of influential people in the media to change American reading habits. A coalition of publishers, booksellers, librarians, and journalists, among others, came up with the idea of National Library Week. In the spring of 1958 the first National Library Week campaign was launched with the theme of: “Wake Up and Read.” To find out more about this and other topics visit the American Library Association website at: www.ala.org/pio/nlw.
