The library’s old reader/printers were heavily used in their prime, since our collection of microfilm and microfiche is extensive – approximately 360,000 pieces. Because of the high cost of a new reader/printer, replacing our old machines kept getting deferred in recent years. Recognizing the importance of improving access to the film and fiche collection, the library recently purchased three new Canon digital reader/printers at a cost of $9,000 each. Five old reader/printers that had been in service for nearly 10 years have been removed.

One of the most attractive features of the new machines is that they can be connected to a PC, although they are not at this time. At some point in the future, users may be able to read an article on microfilm and, instead of printing out a paper copy, send a digital copy of the article to their own e-mail account.
