HarpWeek: The Civil War Era
(1857 - 1865)

More news

HarpWeek: the Civil War Era, is the full-text online database for Harper’s Weekly. Considered a primary source for examining 19th century America on a weekly basis, students researching the Civil War years, 1857-1865, should find this a valuable source of information. Images of the original newspaper can be viewed and printed in the library. Instructions for downloading the HarpWeek print software to personal computers will be available in the near future from the library’s Databases page.

HarpWeek’s main menu offers searching by date, subject index, and full-text. Literature can be browsed by genre and people located by occupation or role in society. A search can be narrowed using features of the original Harper’s Weekly including: illustrations, advertisements, biographical sketches, obituaries, cartoons, editorials, fiction, government proclamations, news stories, maps, poetry, portraits and more.

For new users a demonstration and a help topics page are available. Access HarpWeek through the library’s Databases page at http://www.svsu.edu/library/dbases.html. For off campus access users will be prompted for their name and library bar code number.
