Four Segments Added to HarpWeek

In the winter 2003 issue of Zahnow Notes, HARPWEEK was introduced to SVSU library users. HARPWEEK is the electronic version of Harper’s Weekly, America’s leading 19th century newspaper. Of the nine segments available through the HARPWEEK database, access was purchased last winter to the “1875-1865: The Civil War Era” only. This past fall, a grant from the Kellogg Foundation to the Michigan Library Consortium made it possible to expand access to four additional segments:
  • 1866-1871: Reconstruction I
  • 1872-1877: Reconstruction II
  • 1878-1883: Gilded Age I
  • 1884-1889: Gilded Age II

Unique features of HARPWEEK include the original newspaper image and searching options that retrieve illustrations, advertisements, obituaries, cartoons, editorials, maps, poetry and more. To download or print results from HARPWEEK see the HELP link on the HARPWEEK home page.

For more information or questions regarding HARPWEEK, call the Reference Desk at (989) 964-4242.
