ACLS History E-Book Project

This fall, SVSU library users have access to a collection of over 700 e-books through the American Council of Learned Societies’ History E-Book Project. Zahnow Library joined several other Michigan academic libraries in a group purchase of this product, with an option to add titles annually. Upon consulting with SVSU history faculty, Paul Teed, Associate Professor commented, “Having reviewed the E-Book project I can now say with certainty that it would be an extraordinarily useful resource for my students.”

ACLS, eight learned societies and a select group of University Presses, initiated the History E-Book Project with eight goals in mind. These goals are outlined on the “About the Project” page that can be accessed at http://www.historyebook.org. Goals focus on encouraging historians to plan and write e-books and scholarly presses to experiment with electronic publishing. Other goals include archiving scholarly text, fair use issues, promotion and review of e-books and other related professional concerns.

Titles in the History-E-Book database can be accessed via the “Databases” link on the library’s homepage, http://library.svsu.edu. Searches can be done through four search options including, a simple search, Boolean search, proximity search and bibliographic search. A “search history” option is also provided to track past search strategies. In addition, users can browse titles alphabetically by author, title or subject.
