The Reference Services Department is made up of the following areas
Research Assistance : whether in person at the 1st floor Reference Desk or by telephone or email, Reference librarians assist the public with finding resources for their research needs. The Reference Desk is complemented by more than 20 computers for users to search online databases, the internet or check e-mail. It is also complemented by the Reference Collection containing several hundred sources such as subject specific encyclopedias, dictionaries, almanacs and maps, as well as several desks and comfortable seating for convenient study. Library Instruction - Library instruction is available in formal sessions requested by
SVSU faculty throughout the year. Multimedia technology is used in conjunction with
hands-on assignments to enhance the learning experience of the students who
participate in the instruction sessions. Library Instruction sessions are conducted in
Zahnow Library’s Instruction Lab. The lab, housed in Zahnow Library (room Z111), is equipped with an Instructor Podium, 60 workstations and two networked printers. See the Library Instruction page for more information.
Internet Resources & Services - The library offers many Internet based resources
and services that are supported and maintained by the reference staff. These
resources include the library home page, library news and newsletter, Ask a Librarian
email service, the SLIC LaunchPad of Internet resources, and public access
workstations. Internet instruction is provided through faculty requests for class

sponsored by SVSU may request reference and research assistance. Services such as Interlibrary Loan are available as well as classroom instruction, if requested by the faculty member teaching the class. Off campus students also have services and resources that may be accessed at the Off Campus Library Services web site. See the Off Campus Services page for more informationDatabases - Numerous online databases are available to library users covering a vast array of subjects. Many contain citations and the full-text to journal articles, books and other information. Databases focusing on subject specific disciplines include business (Business Source Premier), education (ERIC), history (America History and Life), literature (MLA Bibliography), medicine (Medline), nursing (CINAHL plus Full-text), psychology (PsycInfo) the sciences and engineering (Science Direct College Edition). JSTOR, Project MUSE, ProQuest, Gale Power Search, and Wilson Select Plus are large databases which cover a multitude of subjects and contain thousands of full-text articles, some dating back several decades.
