The Collection Development & Acquisitions Department is made up of the following areas
Collection Development : the process of planning and building a library collection. Collection development staff use statistics, surveys, and projections to assess the information needs of the library's users and develop a collection development policy. Collection development includes budget planning and maintenance, formulation of selection criteria, evaluation and management of the collection, and coordination of liaisons.
All Zahnow librarians act as a liaison to one or more academic departments. Liaisons are responsible for selecting books and other materials to be purchased by the library. Requests from faculty are instrumental in making collection decisions; however, liaisons also use their educational background and experience, as well as a variety of review sources, to make their decisions. To contribute suggestions for new materials please use our online suggestion form.
Acquisitions : the process of selecting, ordering, and receiving library materials; items acquired by the library may be purchased, exchanged, or donated. The library obtains materials either directly from the publishers or through arrangements made with third-party suppliers. Acquisitions staff work closely with library liaisons, publishers, suppliers, and University purchasing and receiving to ensure timely and accurate delivery of materials regardless of type, format, and language.
Cataloging : the description and organization of library resources so that researchers may locate and use them. Following widely-used standards, cataloging staff modify or create records for the library's online catalog. From printed books and journals to music scores and electronic resources, cataloging staff work with materials in all subject areas, many languages, and in any format. Cataloging staff work closely with colleagues in Reference and Access services to provide access to materials in a timely manner.
Periodicals : Periodicals staff acquire, manage, and provide timely and accurate access to periodicals in all formats. Periodicals, also referred to as serials, are materials published and received on a continuing basis; they include journals, magazines, newspapers, newsletters, microforms, databases, and electronic journals. Periodicals staff are responsible for cataloging and processing periodicals in all languages, formats and subject areas, including print, microform, and electronic formats; they collect, maintain, and bind print volumes through the year and perform data entry for periodical holdings. Periodicals staff work closely with colleagues in reference services to ensure that library researchers can find the information they seek in the library's periodicals collection.
Zahnow Library's print and microform serial collections are housed on the second floor of the library. These materials are available for use in the library. Microform readers/printers are available for viewing and printing pages of microform materials; photocopiers are available to make copies of individual print pages. Assistance in locating and using print and microform periodicals is available at the Periodicals Desk near the 2nd floor entrance.
The Zahnow Library provides access to a variety of periodicals online. Many titles are available for browsing; individual articles may be read online or printed for personal use.
