Core FTP Lite gives you FTP access to your site, allowing you to upload and download files, create /remove directories, and create/remove files, among other functions. Using the download set up by SVSU, you also have FTP access to your M: Drive through NetStorage and the CSIS server (for students of the CS and CIS programs).
When you first open Core FTP, you will be given a Site Manager dialog. This is where you will set up your site. Most of the fields have already been filled in for you, but you should make sure that things are set as needed.
If you haven't yet, create a new folder somewhere on your computer to be the home for your local copies of the files placed in your web space.
| Step | Action |
|---|---|
| 1 | Open Core FTP Lite. |
| 2 | Give your site a Site Name - generally just the club name, "My SVSU site", or leaving it as "WWW" will do. |
| 3 | For the Host / IP / URL, type in: www.svsu.edu. |
| 4 | Enter your Username (SVSU Username) and Password (SVSU Password). You can uncheck the Don't Save Password box if you wish. |
| 5 | Click the Advanced button next to Host / IP / URL, then click Directory/Folder on the left. |
| 6 | For Remote Start Folder, If it is your personal directory, |
| 7 | For Local Start Folder, select the folder you created to be the home for your local file copies. |
| 8 | Click OK. |
| 9 | Finally, you have the option to Connect or Close. |
Any files you want to create will need to be made on your computer using any number of programs designed for text editing or graphics/photo manipulation, then saved to your local folder for your web site.
When you are connected to your site through Core FTP, you should see your actual web site's files on the right, and your local files on the left. If you set the site up correctly using the steps above, they should almost match.
To transfer files, you can click and drag back and forth, or make use of the buttons with the Left (download) or Right (upload) arrows.
What is important to remember is that this program does not preserve your directory structure as you download and upload files, so you will have to manually keep yourself in the same folder on both sides of the screen while downloading and uploading individual files. However, if you choose to download or upload an entire directory, the structure beneath it will be maintained.
