Symantec Anti-Virus Installation Instructions
Home Installation Instructions for Windows and OS X
(Linux users should protect their systems with a free anti-virus program called Antivir, available at www.free-av.com )
NOTICE: Symantec Anti-Virus Licensing allows for only one license for one home computer system - not for multiple computers you may own. Please do not violate this agreement. In addition, if you are not a full-time employee or registered student, you are not eligible to download or use this software.
- IMPORTANT: Prior to installing Symantec AntiVirus (SAV), please remove any other anti-virus software you may have installed (ie. CSAV, McAfee, or earlier versions of Norton/Symantec) . Failure to remove other anti-virus applications "may" result in your computer crashing and/or rebooting.
- To remove any application, open Control Panel and select Add/Remove Programs.
- Double-click CSAV or McAfee (or other program) and choose to Remove the software
- Stabilize Your Windows PC
- It is very important to get your system in its best operating condition prior to installing any major utility like an antivirus package. Having your Operating System critical updates installed will help ensure a smooth installation. Visit the Stabilize Your Windows PC page found on the Support Center site and perform TIPS 1, 2, & 3 prior to installing Symantec.
- Perform a quick virus scan of your system from the web at: security.symantec.com
- Download Symantec Anti-Virus software from SVSU (self extracting executable).
- The link to download is at the bottom of this document.
- Read the License Agreement for the permission to use/install SAV
- If you agree to the terms, click the 'I Agree' button
- You will then be required to authenticate yourself by using your
username & password (similar to how you log into the campus network and/or Vmail) - Upon authentication you will be presented a dialogue window to
Open or Save the application (choose SAVE) - Within the Save As dialogue, take note as to what folder you are saving SAVHome.exe (you may accept the default or navigate to another downloads folder).
- Click the Save button
- Navigate to where you saved the file, then
- Double click on the SAVHome file to begin the extraction.
- Note: If you do not remember where it was saved to, you can simply perform a File search
- To do a file search in Windows:
- Click the Start button, select Search (or Find, for older Windows versions)
- Choose Files & Folders
- Type in the Name of the file: SAVHome
- "Look in:" should be set to your C:\ drive
- Click Search (or Find Now)
- Once it finds the file, double click on on the file to begin the extraction
- To do a file search in Windows:
- When you see the Self-Extraction Program window, click YES
- You'll see a Yellow Shield
by your clock if you have a Successful Installation
- To verify that you have the most current program and definition (DEF) files
- Right-click on the shield and choose Open Symantec Anti-Virus
