ResNet Routers & Switches Policy

Background:

Students living in the SVSU Residential facilities often need additional ports to support game consoles or wireless access for group entertainment or group study activities.

Routers owned by students render basic ResNet security requirements difficult to enforce. This exposes the entire ResNet susceptible to viruses, malware, and other forms of computer attacks.

Policy:

Beginning in the Fall of 2008, SVSU will not permit personally owned routers to be installed in ResNet.

Students who just need multiple ports may install their own switch. Below is a list of suggested switches..

Students who need wireless in the Resident facilities will need to check out an SVSU switch from the Housing Office . The switch will require a deposit of $50, $30 of which will be refunded when the switch is checked back in. (Note these switches provide 3 extra ports.)

Switches will be checked out for the entire academic year (Fall and Winter Semesters).

Checkout deposits for chekcouts later in the year will not be prorated.

Support/Questions:

If you have technical questions, please first read the FAQS below. Then if you still have questions, contact the ITS Support Center.

Sign Up:

To obtain a check out switch, follow these steps:

2. Housing Officials will contact you afterSeptember 8th, if you're eligible to check-out an SVSU switch.

3. Sign the Check out agreement at the Housing Office after being contacted by the Housing Office.

4. Pay the deposit fee at the Cashiers Office after being contacted by the Housing Office.

5. Take the deposit receipt to the Housing Office after being contacted by the Housing Office..

FAQS:

Should I get a "wireless" switch in my 2 room efficiency in LCN/LCS?

Long ethernet cables would be sufficient and less costly.  If you need multiple ports, see the FAQ below.  Otherwise, if you require wireless - you can sign up for one, if they're available.

If I need multiple ports and want to use my own switch, which ones are acceptable?

The recommended switches commonly available at stores like Best Buy and Circuit City are:

Linksys: EZXS55W, EG005W, SD2005

Netgear : FS605, GS605, GS105, GS105, FS105, GS105NA, GS605NA

D-Link: DGS-2205, DES-1105,

What if I peel off the tape on the back of the check-out switch and reset the unit to factory settings?

The unit will be immediately denied ResNet access, and you will have to take the switch to the ITS Support Center to have unit reset. You will be charged $10 for the reset.

What if I remove the plug and insert a data patch cord into "Internet" port on the check-out switch?

The unit will be immediately denied ResNet access, and you will have to take the switch to the ITS Support Center to have unit reset. You will be charged $10 for the reset.

What if a friend from off campus wants to use a port for their game console?

They will have to register the console or the unit will be immediately denied ResNet access, and you will have to take the switch to the ITS Support Center to have unit reset. You will be charged $10 for the reset.

How do I access the wireless antenna in the check-out switch?

Each switch has a unique passcode that you will need to utilize the antenna.

Can a friend use the wireless antenna?

Yes, but you must share the antenna's passcode and their computer must be registered just like any other computer in ResNet.

I want to use the wireless antenna in the check-out switch when I'm in my room and also use the various Wireless Hotspots on campus. Is the access different?

Yes. You will use the unique passcode to access your antenna in your room, and you will use your SVSU UserID and password when accessing the SVSU Hotspots.
