Secure Wireless Setup Guide for Windows XP

NOTE:  Wireless Access does not exist in housing units and is only available in certain locations on campus (more information).  To configure/secure your wireless router in your housing unit click here.

Please fully review the Wireless Network Overview and Support Policy before proceeding (it includes the locations where wireless access points can be found on campus). SVSU Guest users click here.

All wireless NICs (Network Interface Cards)  must be WPA compliant for security purposes.

If you have not changed your password since October 20th 2005, you will need to re-synchronize your password to include the secure wireless network. Do it right now by visiting the change password page at: https://www.svsu.edu/changepassword/

Follow the steps below to configure your Windows XP wireless system for the SVSU Wireless Network. For graphical instructions or special setup guides pertaining to other operating systems (Mac, Windows 98/Me/2000, Linux) click here.

Step 1
Start up your computer with your wireless card inserted/enabled.

Step 2
When in range of a wireless access point, you will typically see a popup in your taskbar indicating that "Wireless Networks Detected". Click on the popup to open the Wireless Network Connection dialogue screen.

Or, you can pre-configure your system before visiting campus by going to:

  • Start-->Control Panel-->Network Connections
  • Right-Click on your Wireless Network Connection
  • Select Properties.

Step 3
Click Change Advanced Settings found in the Related Tasks section. This will open the Wireless Network Connection Properties dialogue window. Perform the following steps:

  • While not 100% necessary for all users, you might take this opportunity to further secure your system from unwarranted access. Uncheck: File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks. If you don't want to share your files with other students/users - turn this off.
  • Click on the Wireless Networks tab
(Note: if you don't have a Wireless Network tab, you don't have a Wireless NIC installed or properly configured. Check with your computer vendor.)

  • Click on the Add button under the Preferred networks section
    • Set the SSID box to: Registration
    • Set the Network Authentication box to: WPA
(Note: if you don't have WPA as an option, your NIC does not support it and you'll need to purchase a Wireless NIC that is WPA compliant)
    • Set the Data Encryption box to: TKIP

  • Click on the Authentication tab
    • Set the EAP-Type box to PEAP [Protected EAP (PEAP)]
    • Uncheck the Authenticate boxes
    • Click on the Properties button
      • Uncheck the Validate Server Certificate box
      • The Select Authentication Method box should have:
        Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2)
      • Click on the Configure button
      • Uncheck the Automatically use my Windows logon box

  • Click the OK button until all screens are closed.

Step 4
Now, every time you're on campus within range of a wireless network access point, you should get a Wireless Network Connection popup on your taskbar, requiring credentials for connection. Click on the popup, and you'll be presented a logon screen.

  • Enter your SVSU User name
  • Enter your SVSU Password
  • Leave Logon Domain BLANK

Note: it may take several minutes to complete the logon process. You will notice another popup displaying your Wireless Network Connection is now connected; showing what network you're connected to (Registration) and the Signal Strength.

Step 5
You will need to register your computer system and follow the guidelines as set forth for ResNet users. The registration process requires the system to have an up to date anti-virus (SVSU provides FREE anti-virus software to registered students, faculty and staff, check out our software download page for more information) and the latest Operating System updates installed. If you wish to perform these steps prior to visiting campus, click on the related links and install the appropriate items for your system.
