Secure Wireless Setup Guide for Windows Vista

 

NOTE: Wireless Access does not exist in housing units and is only available in certain locations on campus known as Wireless Hotspots.

Getting Started

Start --> Control Panel --> Network and Internet --> Network and Sharing Center

  • Under “Tasks” select “Manage wireless networks”.

(Note: If there is a network listed as “Registration” in the “Manage wireless networks” window and you are currently unable to connect, skip down to the Connection Settings portion of this guide.)

  • In the “Manage Wireless Networks” window Click add.
  • Now you are prompt to a window that asks “How do you want to add a network?”
  • Click “Manually create a network profile” 
    -For Network name enter: SVSU
      -Set Security type to: WPA2-Enterprise
      -Set Encryption type to: TKIP
      -Uncheck: all boxes
    -Click next.

Note: If the network was added you will get a window stating that you have successfully added Registration.  If not you will need to make sure you followed each step again.

Connection Settings

  • Click on “Change connection settings” (if you are jumping from the Manage wireless network, right click on "SVSU" and select properties.)
  • Under the Connection tab Uncheck:  All boxes.
  • Under the Security tab confirm that:
    -Security type is set to: WPA2-Enterprise               
    -Encryption type is set to: TKIP
    -Uncheck: all boxes
    -Network authentication method set to: Protected EAP (PEAP)
  • Select settings for PEAP 
    -Uncheck: all boxes
  • Authentication Method set to:
    -Secure password (EAP-MSCHAP v2)
    -Click on the Configure button  
    -Uncheck the “Automatically use my Windows logon…”
  • Click the OK button until you are back at the window stating you have successfully added Registration and click “Connect to…” 
    -Select “SVSU” and click the Connect button.
  • If you already had Registration as a network, in “Manage wireless networks”
    -Click Add
    -“Add a network that is in range of the computer”
    -Select “SVSU” and click the Connect button.      

Finalizing       

  • Click Enter/select additional log on information
    -Enter your SVSU User name
    -Enter your SVSU Password
    -Leave Logon domain blank
  • The connection process may take a while.  When you are connected it will display “Successfully connected to SVSU”.
