 FREQUENT ASKED QUESTIONS

Do you allow wired and wireless routers on campus?

  • No, we do not allow routers.

  • A list of approved anti-virus programs can be found here.

Can the port in the living room (university village) be turned on?

  • No.  Unfortunately, the electronics necessary to provide access to all ports are expensive.  The only alternative would be to forego ports in other rooms...

What is P2P (Peer to Peer) and why is it prohibited?

  • P2P applications (like Limewire, Ares, BitTorrent, Morpheus, and others) are used primarily for file sharing purposes. Most P2P uses are for illegal file sharing, like music downloading.  SVSU prohibits illegal activities from occurring on the network, therefore P2P has been prohibited.  More information can be read here.

What is the history of ResNet?

  • During 1998, the University began a cabling and equipment project to extend microcomputer networking capabilities into University housing.  This networking project for University residential housing has been nicknamed “ResNet”.  The premise of this project is to enhance the capabilities of microcomputers that students bring with them to campus by providing high speed connectivity (100 Megabit switched ethernet) to the SVSU Computer Network.  Each student staying in University housing (which consists of the First Year Suites, Living Center, University Village and the Pine Grove apartments) will have the option of connecting their microcomputer to their own personal network connection in their room.
