Basic Setup Questions

How do I get Groupwise software for my computer and how do I get support?

Answer:  First of all, you need to have a Groupwise account (for staff and faculty) and then have the Groupwise client installed.  It is recommended that users obtain training before using the Groupwise software. To install on your office computer, double-click the Application Explorer icon on your Windows desktop and then double-click the All icon.  You should find within this window a "Groupwise 7 Run" icon.  This will either install or heal Groupwise client.  If you prefer not to do this on your own, please contact the ITS Support Center at 964-4225, or email questions to support@svsu.edu, or visit our office located in South Campus B 128.

Groupwise has the error:  The GRPWISE.EXE file is linked to the missing export MAPI32.DLL

Answer:  This error often occurs when users have inadvertently enabled Netscape Messenger as their default email application. To correct this problem:

  • launch Netscape and click on the Edit menu, select Preferences
  • Choose Mail & Newsgroups category
  • Uncheck the last option named: Use Netscape Messenger from MAPI-based applications.
  • Exit Netscape

Groupwise should run okay now.  The next time Netscape Messenger prompts to enable it as the default, check the box: Do not perform this check in the future and click No.

How do I change the font for Groupwise email?

Answer:  You can change fonts for individual messages by hitting F9 while viewing any outgoing mail item (cursor must be in the body of the message), or you can change the default by following the steps listed below.

To change the default font in HTML view

If you set the default view as Plain Text, the Windows* system default font is used for your message text. However, if you choose HTML as your default view, HTML tools become available in your outgoing and incoming messages. You can also choose a different default font for your outgoing messages.

Go to your Tools menu, select Options, then double-click Environment, click the Views tab.
Check Use Default Views for reading, then select HTML and then choose your font and font size.

Groupwise Access from Home Questions

How do I access my Groupwise mail from off-campus?

Answer: There are two ITS supported methods for faculty/staff to access your Groupwise data from off-campus (all require internet access).

1. Using the Groupwise WebAccess feature, you can access your Groupwise data via any internet connection using a web browser, such as FireFox, Safari, Netscape, or Internet Explorer (do not use the AOL Browser to access your accounts, as you will encounter problems).  Enter the following as your URL or web site (or simply click this link - gw.svsu.edu - which is also found under the quick links of the main SVSU web pages labeled as Faculty/Staff E-Mail):  You will then be allowed to login in to your Groupwise account; accessing email, calendar, and other stored information you need through this web interface. Bookmark it for easier access next time!

NOTE: If you have problems using the newer WebAccess (be it dial-up or older operating systems), you might want to try the Low (dial up) option and Basic settings (which reduces your functionality, but offers speed with your slower connection), you can do this by navigating from the main SVSU web page to the Faculty & Staff information page, clicking on the link under the Information Technology Section.

2. You can install a copy of the Groupwise Client on your home computer.  It is the same client used on your office computer system. ITS strongly recommends that the client only be installed on computers that have high-speed internet access (broadband).  Click on the Software Download link found in the right hand column. Please do not install this version on your office computer systems- rather contact us and we'll help you get it installed properly.

How do I set appointment alarms to remind me I have an appointment coming up?

Answer:  By default, when you create an appointment it enables the alarm feature to go off 10 minutes before the appointment. To be notified of appointments (or incoming messages), you need to have Groupwise Notify enabled.  You can enable it two ways: 1) in Groupwise, select Tools-Options-Environment-General-Launch Notify at startup of Groupwise, or 2) drag the Groupwise Notify program into your StartUp folder.  In order for appointment alarms to function, you must subscribe to them (Tools-Options-Security-Notify [make sure your account is listed and has the notify options enabled].

To modify how you're notified or the alarm works, right-click on the Notify icon in the system tray and choose Options.  Under the Alarms tab, you can specify how the alarm will work (via dialog popup, a sound clip, or run a program).
