Student Password Policy
For purposes of this policy, the term "student" refers to any admitted student who is not employed at SVSU in a capacity other than student employment.
Username Lookup
- Students may find out what their technology access id or Username (sometimes referred to as User ID or Login ID) is by utilizing the web-based password synchronization screen at https://www.svsu.edu/changepassword. Usernames typically consist of the student's first and middle initials, plus the first six digits of the student's last name. This Username can be used to access services such as the student's SVSU email account via "Vmail" (email address is in the format username@svsu.edu), the student's Novell network account (for utilizing computer labs) and the student's academic record information via "Cardinal Direct". More information regarding these services can be found at http://www.svsu.edu/support/index.cfm?doc_id=1896.
Password Reset/Change
- Students may utilize the web-based password synchronization screen, at https://www.svsu.edu/changepassword, to reset/change and synchronize their password across all systems, to which they have been granted access, without knowing their current password. Successful usage of this screen requires the student to know the last four digits of their Social Security Number, the last seven digits of their Student ID (identified on their SVSU ID card as id #), and their date of birth. Students who do not know their Student ID (have not obtained or have lost their SVSU ID card) need to bring picture ID to the Registrar's Office or the IT Services Support Center, to obtain their Student ID.
- Students who work for SVSU in a student employment capacity may be granted access as necessary to the Administrative Information System to utilize certain components of our information system software, Colleague. When these students utilize the password synchronization screen their password to the Colleague system will not be changed. The Colleague system password must be changed using the password change routines available after logging into the Colleague system.
Initial Password
- As students are granted access to systems (see the Student Technology Access Policy at http://www.svsu.edu/its/policies/studenttechaccesspolicy.html for details) their initial passwords for those systems are set to an undisclosed value.
- Student employees who are granted access to the Colleague system will be told their initial Colleague password after submission of a Colleague User Access Request form to IT Services Operations.
Initial Password Change
- After students are granted access to systems, in order to log into these systems for the first time, students must utilize the web-based password synchronization screen, at https://www.svsu.edu/changepassword, to reset/change and synchronize their password across all the systems they have access to.
- Student employees who are granted access to the Colleague system will know their initial Colleague password and will be required to change their password upon first login to Colleague.
Subsequent Password Changes
- Once students have utilized the web-based password synchronization screen, at https://www.svsu.edu/changepassword, to reset/change and synchronize their password across all the systems they have access to, any subsequent password changes may be performed using the password synchronization screen.
- Student employees who are granted access to the Colleague system may change their password to the Colleague system by using the password change routines available after logging into the Colleague system.
- Starting in June 2007, all network (e-mail, Blackboard, Cardinal Direct, and VSpace) passwords will expire on or about February 1st, June 1st, and October 1st. This will only affect current students. Alumni are not affected by this policy.
Password Forgotten
- If students forget their password to any system, their password can be reset by utilizing the web-based password synchronization screen, at https://www.svsu.edu/changepassword.
- Student employees who have access to the Colleague system and have forgotten their Colleague password need to bring picture id to IT Services Operations or confer with their supervisor regarding the procedure for getting their password reset.
