Office 2007 Compatibility Tips for SVSU Faculty

Office 2007 Compatibility Tips for SVSU Faculty

With the advent of Office 2007 being purchased by SVSU students and faculty for their home computer systems, we feel it is important to remind users that ITS does not plan to upgrade SVSU owned computer stations (labs/offices/classrooms) until Spring 2008.

Below are some tips to help you share Microsoft Office files and maximize compatibility between versions.

The best advice that we can give you and that you can instruct your students to do, is to save Word documents as .RTF files!

To Save Word Documents as RTF Files:

1. In Word 2007, select the Office Button in the upper left corner.
2. Select “Save As”
3. Select RTF

• Files created in Office 2003 can be easily read in Office 2007
• You can identify Office 2007 files by the extension. Office 2007 files end with the letter “x”, i.e. .docx, .xlsx, .pptx
• Files created in the Office 2007 cannot be opened by Office 2003 without the Microsoft Compatibility Pack
• SVSU Computer Labs and teaching computers do have the Compatibility Pack installed, but this isn’t 100% reliable!!
• To download the Compatibility Pack for your home computer Click Here

Important!
• All of the features used within Office 2007 will not be available in Office 2003!!

• Macintosh users - there is currently no compatibility pack for Office 2004. Mac users will have to wait until the release of MSOffice 2008 to support Office 2007 file formats.
