Student Password Policy

For purposes of this policy, the term "student" refers to any admitted student who is not employed at SVSU in a capacity other than student employment.

Username Lookup

  • Students are initially provided their Username and SVSU ID number via a mailed letter either from Undergraduate Admissions (Post Orientation Sign-up Letter), Graduate Admissions (Admission letter), College of Education Admissions and Certification Office (Admission letter), or the Registrar's Office (Technology Access letter for re-admits) or at orientation time from the Office of International Programs. Usernames typically consist of the student's first and middle initials, plus the first six digits of the student's last name. This Username can be used to access services such as the student's SVSU email account via "Vmail" (email address is in the format username@svsu.edu), the student's Novell network account (for utilizing computer labs) and the student's academic record information via "Cardinal Direct". More information regarding these services can be found at http://www.svsu.edu/its.
  • Students who do not know their Username for purposes of utilizing the password change screen, can obtain their Username by any of the following methods:
    1. Having another admitted or registered student login to the Search for Students option of the online SVSU directory, http://www.svsu.edu/lookup and search for their name. The username is the part of the email address preceding the @svsu.edu.

Bringing picture ID to the Registrar's Office, Cashier's Office, Undergraduate Admissions, Graduate Admissions, the College of Education Admissions and Certification Office, the Office of International Programs, the SVSU off-campus administration office where they are enrolled or to the IT Services Support Center. Students may also call Undergraduate Admissions, Graduate Admissions, or the College of Education Admissions and Certification Office to have their Username re-mailed to them.
    3. Contacting the IT Services Support Center via phone. If the student can provide ID verification information, they will be provided their username.

Initial Password

This will synchronize their password across all the systems they have access to. Students will need to know their Username, SVSU ID number, last 4 digits of social security number and birth date to initially set their password. Students who do not know their SVSU ID number need to bring picture ID to the Registrar's Office or the IT Services Support Center, to obtain their SVSU ID number.
