SVSU Outstanding Performance Award
The SVSU Outstanding Performance Award was created to recognize annually the accomplishments of an Administrative Professional employee who has demonstrated outstanding individual and/or team performance at SVSU. The employee presented with the SVSU Outstanding Performance Award will be provided a unique and customized opportunity for career development with the goal of enhancing the employee’s professional development opportunities.
Criteria
Outstanding Performance Is Defined As One or More of the Following:

Exemplary Work: Demonstrated and sustained outstanding performance that consistently exceeds goals and job expectations in quantity and quality. This may include a superior effort in meeting productivity, providing customer service, or achieving similar goals. - Teamwork: Acting as an exceptionally effective and cooperative team member in carrying out goals of SVSU, the Division, or department, demonstrating superior interactions with and a positive influence on managers, peers, supervisors, subordinates, the University community, and the client population served.
- Leadership: Acting formally or informally as leader within Department/Division/University. Gains respect, commitment, and credibility from other team members. Demonstrates ability to energize others and motivate team to reach full potential.
- Creativity: One-time innovation or creation that results in time/dollar savings or benefit, or ongoing innovative/creative activities that benefit organizational systems, protocols, and/or procedures.
- Organizational Abilities: Extraordinary skills in leadership resulting in the accomplishment of significant departmental/unit goals and objectives; project management (which could include developing a project and implementing it with substantial success); organizational capability leading to a greater level of departmental effectiveness.
Award
The recipient of the Outstanding Performance Award will receive the following:
- Stipend of $2,500. The stipend is unrelated to the funding of the development opportunity described below. This cash award is unrestricted and provided directly to recipient.
- Development Opportunity. An opportunity to work with SVSU leadership to identify professional development opportunities of the highest caliber. Such opportunities and any associated paid time away from work will be funded by this Award.
- The development activity should be designed in conjunction with the recipient’s Vice President or Executive Director with the professional goals of the individual and the mission of University in mind. Examples of types of development activities could include:
- Funding for courses and workshops leading to a degree, certification, license, or undertaken to develop skills and knowledge;
- Paid leave, for a limited time, which would enable the employee to pursue the development of professional skills or research outside the organization;
- A training opportunity within the same or another department or another campus, to develop skills, enhance the employee’s professional knowledge, or increase career opportunities;
- Professional seminars and conferences.
Process
- All Administrative Professional employees of SVSU are eligible to receive the Outstanding Performance Award.
- Nominations may come from any person—other SVSU employees or those outside of the University. It is only necessary that the nominating person is aware of a nominee’s outstanding performance at SVSU and is willing to submit a Letter of Nomination.
- Letters of nomination should be sent to the Outstanding Performance Award Selection Committee (attn: Jim Dwyer).
- The Committee will review all nominations and create a finalist list of no more than 10 individuals by Friday, February 22, 2008.
- The Committee will then contact each finalist and request the following:
- a statement of interest from finalist
- an updated resume from finalist
- a letter of recommendation from the finalist’s Vice President or Executive Director (submit directly to Committee)*
- recommendation from finalist’s manager (submit directly to Committee)*
- a letter of recommendation from another person knowledgeable about finalist’s performance at SVSU (may be a person internal or external to SVSU; submit directly to Committee)
*Note: if the original nominator was the finalist’s manager or Vice President/Executive Director, then a letter of recommendation from someone else internal to SVSU should be obtained instead.

- Finalist Materials Deadline: Friday, March 7, 2008
- The Committee will select the Award recipient by Friday, March 21, 2008.
- This award is intended to be distributed annually. However, there may not be a recipient each year and the University reserves the right to change or discontinue this award at any time.
