Announcing the Healthy U Wellness Program

Overview How it Works Rewards

Healthy U isn’t really a place, but it is a state of mind and an approach to taking ownership of our health.  “Healthy U” is what we call SVSU’s Wellness Program.

Healthy U logoIf you are interested in any of the following, it's time to become an active part of Healthy U:

We each have our own unique health challenges, whether this means lowering cholesterol levels, losing a few pounds, working with hereditary risk factors, or stress reduction. But all of us can probably make some type of healthy improvement in our lives. At “Healthy U” we each are rewarded for recognizing our own areas for improvement and for just making Positive Progress.

Positive Progress means that you may not have reached all your wellness goals, but you are moving toward achievement of those goals over time. Simply because a healthy you makes for a healthier SVS-U.

Those with questions are encouraged to E-mail wellness@svsu.edu.

How Does it Work?

Track 1:

Track 1 is focused on “Biometrics” testing for total cholesterol, HDL, body mass index (BMI), blood pressure and body fat percentage.

Cholesterol testing is a simple process using a fingerstick poke to draw a tiny amount of blood, giving you results within 6 minutes. BMI, blood pressure and body fat testing are all performed using quick, easy, non-invasive methods.   The advantage of Track 1 is that you are provided with immediate results and coaching from health professionals.

At the annual Wellness Fair, SVSU will pay for all biometrics testing.   At the six month point (October), you may choose to get a “progress report” and have your biometrics tested again.  This time, you must pay for the tests, which will cost approximately $15 and be offered on-site during a designated day (alternative off-site testing can be arranged if necessary).

If you have made Positive Progress toward targeted ranges or are in targeted ranges, you earn Wellness Rewards! At the beginning of the next annual cycle (next April), all biometrics may be tested again, paid by SVSU.  If you have made Positive Progress toward targeted ranges or are in targeted ranges, you earn more Wellness Rewards!  Since this track is more precise in its readings, the rewards for positive progress are greater than for Track 2.

Track 2:

If the biometric testing is not your thing, you can still “enroll” in Healthy U.  On Track 2, you will monitor Positive Progress in the areas of exercise, healthy eating, and educational workshop attendance.

We will provide you with exercise and eating logs (online or paper) to chart your progress.   Track 2 is based on the “honor system,” so it is up to you to record your exercise and eating habits beginning on May 1.  At the end of the six month period, you will earn rewards if your logs have been completed and you have attended at least the required number of Healthy U Workshops.

Positive Progress means...

Covenant Healthcare will supply all of us with “targeted ranges” for our age and gender in each of the five categories to be tested.  Even if you are not within your targeted range, you have made Positive Progress if you move even one point toward your targeted range in a given category.  You don’t have to be an “Ironman” or “Ironwoman” to be rewarded—you just need to be gradually improving your health!

Note: for your initial testing period, we won’t have anything to compare against, so we will provide rewards based on whether you are in targeted ranges.   However, after that initial testing period, we will use Positive Progress as our measure.
