Healthy U is dedicated to helping make positive and lasting changes in healthy living. We do so by offering rewards for individual exercise minutes as well as participation in programs and workshops focused on our three primary components of a healthy living: education, prevention and exercise.
2013 marks the seventh year for SVSU's Healthy U Wellness program. The idea of the SVSU wellness program is that a Healthier U makes for a healthier SVSU. Studies have shown that by implementing a work site wellness program and promoting a culture of fitness, organizations can increase productivity, reduce absenteeism, lower turnover, decrease health care costs and encourage employees to live longer, stronger, healthier lives. The Healthy U program is making it fun, convenient and rewarding for you to reduce health risks through prevention, education and exercise. The American Heart Association recognizes employers who champion the health of their employees and promote a culture of physical activity and wellness in the workplace. SVSU has been recognized for the third year in a row as a Fit-Friendly Company by the American Heart Association. Isn't it time you became a student of Healthy U?
According to the Journal of the American Medical Association (2004), physical inactivity and poor diet are the second leading (actual) causes of death in the United States. In an effort to reverse this trend, Saginaw Valley State university has joined a nonprofit initiative titled: Exercise is Medicine (EIM). EIM was launched by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the American Medical Association (AMA), and recently endorsed by the Surgeon General. EIM is designed to make physical activity and exercise a standard part of disease prevention. Within EIM lies a program titled, Exercise is Medicine on Campus (EIMC), aimed at promoting physical activity and health to faculty, staff, and students on college campuses across the United States. SVSU is honored to be recognized as a campus that promotes healthy lifestyles and physical activity as a means of disease prevention.
