General Questions

How can I find a job at Saginaw Valley State University?
All open positions are listed on Jobs.svsu our Human Resources web site and are updated daily or as needed. Many of the positions are also advertised in the Saginaw, Bay City, Midland Sunday newspapers and The Chronicles of Higher Educations.

Can I apply online?
Starting October 26th, 2005 you can only apply online for open positions in the following employee groups:

  • Administrative and Professionals
  • External Support Staff
  • Temporary Employees

Faculty and internal support staff job postings can be viewed on our website. You will be required to mail in or email the applications materials required in each posting.

What if I don’t have a computer?
A computer workstation is available in the Office of Employment & Compensation Service. There will be personnel there to help you through the application process.

How long does it take to process my resume?
All mailed in and e-mailed resumes are forwarded to the appropriate search committee, typically within days. Online applications are immediately accessible to the search committee.

How can I be sure my application materials were received?
If you applied online, you will receive a conformation number when your application materials are received. When you apply for faculty position, a letter of acknowledgement will be sent to you stating that we have received your resume.

Faculty Employment

What materials are required to apply for a faculty position?
Application materials for a faculty position must have a Curriculum Vita, A cover letter stating the specific position of interest and three professional references.

How do I apply for a Faculty position at Saginaw Valley State University?

How can I learn the status of my resume?
Application materials are forwarded to hiring departments on a continual basis until the position is filled. If the hiring department wishes to invite you to an interview you will be contacted. If not, you will receive a letter informing you of the status of your application and the position.

Administrative/ Professional, External Support Staff

How do I apply for positions at SVSU?
You must first complete an online profile at http://jobs.svsu.edu on any computer with WEB access. You may then view open positions and apply to any positions by answering job-related questions. The application document will be immediately viewable by the hiring manager if you meet the minimum requirements. You must attach an electronic resume and cover letter as you apply for each position. Please bring a disk with your resume/cover letter on it with you if you plan to use the computer in the Human Resources Office.

What materials will I need before I apply?
In addition to your resume and cover letter, you will be asked to provide personal information such as your name, address, phone number, previous employment, and education, as well as contact information regarding your employment history and references. Your resume and cover letter must be in an electronic format such as MS Word or PDF.

Does everyone have to fill out a profile?
Yes. The new Online Employment System has required fields that must be completed by everyone applying for A/P, external Support Staff, or Temporary positions. The profile also asks for important information that may not be included on a resume.

Can I apply for more than one position at a time?
Yes, once you have completed your on-line profile through our on-line site, you can apply for multiple positions. Your profile will be in the system available for you to update and/or submit for another job opening at any time.

How can I learn the status of my resume?

How will I know if I am being considered for a position?
After completing a profile and applying for a position, you may check the status of the position(s) you have applied for and the status of your application by visiting http://jobs.svsu.edu .

Temporary Secretarial/Clerical Pool Questions

What will happen to my application?
Your application will be included in a pool of available applicants for secretarial/pool vacancies.

How soon will I be placed on an assignment?
Vacancies depend on the need of department skills and abilities of individual applicants. Therefore, there is not guarantee if or when you will be assigned.

Who will notify me regarding an assignment?
Individual departments will contact you directly, if you are selected as a candidate or questions.

If I have a problem while on assignment, who do I contact?
You should direct any job-related questions to the immediate Supervisor. You may also contact Human Resources at 964-4108 for assistance.

Will I receive any benefits?
No.

Are there any salary increases?
No.

How much do Pool employees get paid?
If you are hired as additional help in a particular department, the hourly rate will be $7.00/hour.
If you are hired to replace an employee, the hourly rate will be $7.75/hour.

Will I be subject to a background check?
Yes. Any person placed into the University’s temporary pool will have a criminal background check conducted on them prior to the employee starting their first temporary assignment.

When are time cards due?
Time cards are due every two weeks as per the pay schedule by 10 a.m. on Monday prior to the payroll.

Where should I drop off my time card and when will I get paid?
Please refer to the Payroll schedule on the SVSU website, www.svsu.edu/ecs/payroll.

How can I ensure that my time card will be processed on time?

  • Sign your time card
  • Obtain your supervisor’s signature with account number and pay rate
  • Record the total hours for each day (make sure you include your lunch break)
  • Calculate regular hours worked for each week in the “Actual Hours Worked” box
  • Keep each assignment on a separate time card.

How will I be considered for a full-time position?
If you are interested in full time positions, apply online via the jobs.svsu. Job seekers are welcome to use a computer terminals at Saginaw Valley State University’s Human Resources office located on the third floor, 373 Wickes Hall to view current job listings. Please bring with you a disk containing your resume and cover letter if you plan to use the computers at the Human Resources Office.
