Changing Your Benefits due to Life Events

If you are facing a particular kind of change in your life--getting married, having a baby, getting separated, retiring, going on leave, you may be eligible to change your insurance coverage status.

Certain life events allow you to make changes in benefits that otherwise are possible only once a year during an open enrollment period. This list outlines the examples of life events that may qualify for insurance coverage changes:

• When you adopt or are granted legal guardianship.
• When you have a death in your immediate family.
• When you get divorced.
• When you get married.
• When you have a child.
• When your spouse obtains insurance coverage.
• When your spouse loses his/her insurance coverage.
• When you terminate employment with SVSU.
• When you take an unpaid leave of absence.
• When you are ready to retire.

Be sure to make changes with the Human Resources Office at 989.964.7100 within 30 days of the event. If you do not add a dependent within 30 days of the event, you will not be able to add the dependent until the next open enrollment.
