Department of Nursing
Admissions Requirements
The nursing program in the College of Health and Human Services at Saginaw Valley State University is very selective. While the catalog requirements state that an applicant must have a minimum GPA in the science/ math nursing prerequisite courses of 2.5 and an overall GPA of 2.5 to apply, scores in that range have not been competitive the last several years. While we do not know what any group of applicants will be like, to help you determine if your application is competitive, the average GPA in science /math as well as the average overall GPA was approximately 3.4 during the past several years. As stated in the SVSU catalog, the other factors in determining admission are the communication scores (written and oral- interview and writing sample for students who do not have SVSU scores for written communication) and number of credits completed at SVSU.
The nursing program conducts a two step admission process. Students invited to interview will be notified after the application deadline. Students will be notified via their SVSU email accounts of interview times and dates as well as application decisions.
STEP 1 - Apply and be accepted to SVSU.
Before you may apply for admission to the nursing program, you must be admitted to the university. If you have not applied and been admitted to the university, please visit www.svsu.edu/apply. All applicants must have a valid SVSU student ID number. Applicants do not have to be taking courses at SVSU to apply; however SVSU students do receive extra points on their application based on credits completed at SVSU.

STEP 2 - Download and print a Nursing Program Application Packet.

The nursing program application packet contains information about GPA, health, technical standards and other requirements students must meet when they are admitted to the nursing program. Please read this information carefully so that if you are selected for the nursing program, you will be able to comply with the requirements.

- SVSU transcript from Cardinal Direct.
- Current class schedule (from SVSU or current school)
- Copy of all course petition forms (if you have petitioned the Nursing Department or SVSU Registrar regarding a course)
- Transcripts from all schools attended. Official transcripts must be on file in the SVSU Registrar’s Office.
- TER Report (Transfer Evaluation Report) from the Registrar's Office listing how credits transferred to SVSU.
