The emotional and physical health issues during a pregnancy can seem overwhelming. At SVSU, we will make every effort to provide you with a supportive environment intended to assure caring, confidential, non-judgmental, professional assistance and to support others affected by the pregnancy as well.
We realize that some women look forward to the day when they learn they are pregnant, and others never intend to become pregnant at all. Sometimes, however, unanticipated events occur. An unprotected sexual encounter or a failed contraceptive may have resulted in an unintended pregnancy. If you find you are pregnant without planning to be, you may be overwhelmed by conflicting emotions of fear or joy, guilt or anger, all at once. With an unintended pregnancy, such preoccupation is normal. It is a major turning point in your life, and you may be facing some very difficult decisions. Remember, you are not alone when it comes to exploring your options. There are other individuals who will provide you with medical, emotional, and social services. They will offer support and information to help you make personally acceptable decisions.
The staff of Counseling & Health Services will help you maintain your health and well-being during this sensitive period of your life and provide information to assist you with decisions. We will respect your right to uphold the moral, religious, and philosophical beliefs your conscience dictates, and the right to conduct your personal life accordingly. Consultation with your clinician, as well as awareness of and access to the resources available, will help you make informed decisions regarding the pregnancy.
Planning for the future when faced with pregnancy may involve some difficult personal choices. However, a thoughtful decision, based on sound information and a consideration of all options, will help you take control of your life, and will be a positive step for you now and in the future. We hope this resource guide provides you with guidance and sources of support that will help you make personally satisfying decisions.
The goal of the University is to provide a comprehensive support team that emphasizes caring and personal respect. There are many resources available to you that will assist you in continuing toward your academic goals.
