The Green Cardinal Initiative is a group of students, faculty, and staff at Saginaw Valley State University who are interested in creating a more sustainable future. This website allows students, alumni, faculty, staff and community members to sign up to be a Green Cardinal and to join in the conversation. Based on funding from the Allen Foundation, SVSU’s WIRED grant from the Department of Labor, and the SVSU Foundation we are working on several projects including, recycling waste from our Dining Services into organic fertilizer, creating sustainable hydroponics systems for inner city urban areas, developing renewable options for fossil fuels, Vermiponics, and raising environmental awareness on campus and throughout Mid-Michigan. Thanks to a grant from the SVSU Foundation and support from WIRED, students at SVSU are learning more about the environment through the unique process of worm composting. In 2008 and 2009, students participated in a variety of activities including studying the efficiency of worm composting, helping institute a worm composting process in collaboration with SVSU Dining Services, and participating in the Can-o-Worms challenge where teams of students "adopted" a pound of worms for two months. To hear more about what students learned, watch this video.
Saginaw County Youth Leaders to Construct Community Garden

Tuesday, 24 March 2009
Some 70 high school students participating through the Saginaw County Youth Leadership Institute and their Saginaw Valley State University mentors will take part in a community service project Friday, March 27 at the Houghton Jones Resource Center in Saginaw.
From approximately 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the students will convert a vacant lot into a community garden by constructing and decorating a series of raised beds and trellises. They have set a goal of building 40 boxes and then filling them with topsoil and compost to grow vegetables for neighborhood residents as part of the Saginaw Urban Food Initiative. The Saginaw Community Foundation and United Way of Saginaw County Volunteer Start program are providing support for the project.
