OUR
AUDITIONEE FOR THIS CONCERT
Tess
Miller
is
currently a freelance performer and flute instructor from the
mid- Michigan area. She has enjoyed being the flute instructor at
Albion
College since 2000 and in December 2004, Tess received her D.M.A. in
Music Performance from Michigan State University. As a freelance
performer, Tess has played with the Midland, Traverse, Lansing,
Jackson, and Battle Creek Symphony Orchestras. Although she has had
many opportunities to perform traditional symphonic repertoire, her
true passion is for chamber music performance. As a member of the
London Trio (2 flutes and cello), as well as the Everon Duo (flute and
marimba/percussion), Tess is able to pursue musical creativity in the
chamber music realm. As a result of teaming up with these ensembles,
Tess has been able to perform in venues including Mackinac Island, the
Grand Ledge Opera House, the MSU Kellogg Center, and many others. Tess'
dream is to bring to audiences an awareness of and appreciation for
modern concert art music. |

with special guest *World Premiere
The
Composer's "Impressions"… 1.
Arab
Cavalry Practicing
a Charge (Eugene
Delacroix) 4. The Garden
Path (Claude Monet)
The opening cantabile melody presents rich "color tones" set against a canvas of alto and bass flute pianissimo harmonies. Each return of the opening theme occurs with an expanded sense of harmonic color and dynamics, whether through the sensuous timbre of the alto flute or the full tonal palette of the entire flute quartet. The narration is cast against pianississimo trills, almost as if tiny blossoms were quivering in a soft spring breeze. 5. In The Gare
- St. Lazare, Arrival of a
Train
(Claude Monet)
The industrial grit and mechanical movement of this painting is imitated in the flute quartet. Unrelenting syncopation and ostinato, as well as quick, mournful bent tones evoke train whistles and screeching wheels. Rough-hewn, syncopated playing on flute head joints generates a raucous "out-of-tune" locomotive undercover that is set against a soaring Eb flute melody. Expansive ascending and descending runs coupled with abrupt time signature changes creates a feeling of impatience and tumultuous movement. The final fortissimo "shhhh" offers one last release of steam. 6. Sleeping Woman by
the Sea (Pierre-Auguste Renoir)
The languid, cadenza like melody of the C flute floats atop lush harmonic tones provided by the alto and bass flutes. In this semi-conscious "daydream by the sea," some phrases stretch and yawn while others curl to a wisp. The quartet plays gentle, full-ensemble waves while gathering tremolos and glissando-like scales evoke rippling water, shimmering light, and fleeting dreams. 7. The Beach of
Bas-Butin at Honfleur
(Georges Seurat)
The essential style of Seurat, the pointillist or "dot" technique, is imitated in two ways by this movement. First, the quartet whispers quick, round syllables - "pah" or "bah" - in rapid, syncopated patterns. These whispered "sound dots" might represent Seurat's dots being dabbed in quick, succession on a canvas. Second, rapid staccato patterns are tossed amongst the flutes, often with wide leaps. The very opening of the movement features a high-pitched melodic call, as if shouting from a cliff, which then cascades down to a sea of highly energetic vocal and instrumental "dots." 8. La
Bonheur de Vivre (Henri
Matisse)
The painting depicts both the joy of wild action (through joyful dancing) and the joy of serene relaxation. This musical movement takes its form by juxtaposing two tempi and two melodies. The first is a simple, folk-like melody in 3/4 time. This is followed by a bright, energetic dance in which the drum joins the flutes in playful abandon. Back and forth, the contrasting tempi and musical material develop until the wild, dance rhythms triumph in raucous, dissonant display. Nancy
